~Vixen~
I stare out the window as I watch the city lights pass us. I feel a tightness in the pit of my stomach that makes me feel like somethings off—I just can't put my finger on it.
River seems distracted. He won't make any eye contact with me and is gripping the steering wheel so tight his knuckles are white.
"Rive, you good?"
"Yeah, just thinking." He answers while his eyes are glued on the road as we drive to meet a potential supplier.
After coming back home with River, I jumped right into the business. I even started training more. Living a 'normal' life, I had little use for my gun, and I missed it—missed the way it felt between my fingers.
River was impressed by how much I involved myself these last few weeks. I went on a few missions to retrieve money that was owed, gathered intel from a mole in the organization, and even retrieved a hostage that was kidnapped. I graze my scabbed knuckles with my thumb, smiling at the memory of my fist connecting with the flesh of some scum.
I had a bit of a reputation of getting carried away when I'm in the moment, but I didn't care. It was good to be feared. I am going to be Don for the next year and I had to gain respect to be a leader. River was an emotionless, cold-hearted man that everyone feared, and I thrived to be like him.
"Load up, we're almost there."
I cock my gun back, taking the safety off. I make sure I put a few extra mags in the pocket of my leather jacket.
I slide my knife in my thigh holster and one into the sewn-in pocket of my boot. Girls got to be prepared.
As we pull up, I see the highlights of Elliot's corvette pull up behind us along with another car on the other side of us.
River always travels with no less than three guys. With me there, we doubled the security.
This meeting was held outside the city at the loading docks. Usually River doesn't handle these types of meetings but he said it was important for him to be there. I didn't argue with him on it, although he was very hesitant to let me come along. I just wouldn't take 'No' for an answer. River knowing not to argue with me once my mind was made up let me tag along
I lean against the hood of the car and take in the night's air. My nervousness settles again, giving me the warning that something doesn't feel right.
"Rive, you sure about this?" I ask looking over to him.
"It needs to be done Vixen." He replied nonchalantly.
"Why? What are you not telling me? River you have men for this, I don't understand why we had to be here. This is a waste of our tim-" River holds up his gun and taps it to his forehead, closing his eyes and roars, "ENOUGH."
I stare at him as he grips his gun and clenches his jaw, staring straight ahead.
"I don't need you doubting me right now. I told you not to come but you're here. Just shut it and focus."
I turn to Elliot and made eye contact with him, trying to read this situation from him. He shrugs at me and turns his attention in front of him as well. He looked nervous too and I know he knew what was wrong but he wouldn't go against River to tell me.
This wasn't like River—he seemed so far away like he is hiding something. The last few days his focus was on this deal. Even when I tried bringing up our actual threat right now, he told me he is taking care of it and to leave it alone.
Whatever that meant. I hated being left in the dark—despised it. I felt like I was being treated like a child—something River had never really done with me. He never sheltered me about these kinds of things. We were a team.
"River," I started but I was caught off with the sound of three black SUVs pulling up like a bat out of hell.
I slide my hand to my back, gripping my gun that's tucked behind my waistband.
A man slides out of the passenger side of one of the vehicles and walks halfway between us.
"River Consoli, it's a pleasure to come face to face with you." The tall man said with a bitter tone in his voice. He glances my way and a crook of a smile forms. "I'm glad you agreed to meet with me."
River nodded at the man, but his attention never left me.
"Ah, what a treat. I assume this is the famous Vixen Consoli?" He smiled a toothy smile. His eyes darken as if he is undressing me.
I shift my feet uncomfortably and nod at him, "The very one."
"I've heard a lot about you," he said with a smirk.
"I feel like we are at a disadvantage, you seem to know us, but we don't even know your name." My brother spoke, narrowing his eyes, tilting his head, and studying the mystery man.
My mind was spinning. River didn't even know who we were meeting tonight? Why the fuck would he risk this deal? Panic started to creep into my body but I kept it neutral as if I knew what the fuck was happening.
"Well, I wasn't expecting a two for one deal but here we are. Must be my lucky day." He starts toward us—ignoring our previous statements—stopping a few feet before us, clapping his hands together. "Now shall we carry onto business?"
The way he spoke made me feel uneasy. Something was definitely up. I needed to stay high alert. I glanced at River to read his face, he locks eyes with me and I can see he was thinking the same thing.
