"I'm won't do it, I don't care what Nonno says, I won't marry him." I huffed out as I flipped the chair over in frustration.
"Vixen...Relax." River placed his hands on my shoulders to calm me over, but I was fuming how pissed I was.
"Who does he think he is coming in here and demanding a proposal. I never wanted this. I want to lead River, not follow. I'm not going to be some sweet Donna who sits back and lets the men take action." I could feel the brink of tears threating to spill out— not from sadness but of anger.
"You know I will always have your back on this." My mother's deep dark blue eyes shined from my brothers into mine. It was an instant comfort that I longed for. God i hated and loved how much he reminded me of her.
"Okay," I finally said. I was confident in Rivers' words, but I knew better than to underestimate my grandfather.
Since the day I was born I belonged to the Romano family, hypothetically. I was to marry their eldest son who was six at the time. Nicholas Romano, future Don of the Sicilian Mafia. One of the largest and strongest mafias in the world aside from ours. As a truce between our families, I was given as if I was a piece from a game of chess.
My father always promised we'd figure things out when the time came and now the time was here, he wasn't around to keep it.
At least I had River on my side, but the rest of the family expected me to be a puppet in this little charade.
Well...fuck that. I've never met the man, but he always wrote me letters. I rarely responded back because the idea of belonging to someone made me sick. I am my own person and to hell what anyone else thinks.
Whenever he made an appearance around here, I was forbidden to make contact with him. It was supposed to be a 'surprise' on the night of our official engagement—which would be happening in just three days--on my eighteenth birthday.
I heard he was a very handsome man, and at the young age of twenty-four, he had accomplished alot of success and was apparently a very lethal man. They say he'll be one of the fiercest leaders of his generation. I don't know it to be true, since its only little rumors that float around.
"Just go home, take a bath, and release some of these emotions. We don't need another one of your episode right now. Not when we have dozens of families coming in."
I bite my tongue to hold back a snark comment. I knew not to set his nerves off more than they already were. I could tell this was taking a toll on him and I didn't need to add on to it.
"Promise me River, promise me I won't have to marry him. Please."
He studied me hard. "The only way they're going to get you to marry him is over my dead body. I promise." I hugged my brother tightly, thanking him. What would I do without him?
