I can hear the faint chatter of our guests throughout the house. I give myself one last look in the mirror before I make my grand entrance.

I wore a champagne strapless gown that ended just mid-thigh covered by loose drapes of sparkly fabric the fell from my waist to the floor over it. Elegant yet slutty—Just what I was going for. My cleavage was exposed just the right amount and my hair was curled loosely falling to my shoulders.

I finally put on some makeup today to look presentable. It took a lot of concealer to cover my dark under eyes but its hardly noticeable now. I needed to hold my self together so I could prove to everyone I was capable of leading.

A soft knock hit my door, and Elliot walked in looking sharp in his tuxedo. We were having a formal gathering with the nearby gangs and major crime families and their companions.

"Ready?"

"As I will ever be." I give him a small smile and left the room. I made my way down the staircase with Elliot and two of my best men behind me. I had everyone on high alert for potential threats—even doubled on security. Everyone was checked at the door and had left their weapons there, but I wasn't going to chance it.

By law, when a formal meeting is called, there would be no violence or harm upon anyone. It was a temporary peace treaty between all of us. Anyone who would break this law was punishable by the death of their entire family.

I was still armed though. I know a lot of these men are not in agreement with my role in leadership—they think a man should be in charge. My grandfather being one of them—but I will prove them all wrong.

River was the only one who truly believed I had it in me to run things. Most women marry someone to take over if the role ever landed on them.

Not me. I would prove all these fuckers wrong. I was twice the man any of them could ever be.

I walked through the foyer as the double doors opened to the grand dining room where everyone was seated. I walked with an emotionless expression through the room, making my way to the head of the table, keeping my head high and gaze forward.

The room was aired with hushed whispers and appalled faces along with the sound of my stilettos hitting the marble floor.

I pulled out my chair and sat down facing everyone. A hundred pairs of eyes were on me.

"Thank you for coming. As many of you know, my brother River Consoli was murdered a few weeks ago, leaving me— the rightful heir— to lead. Many of you doubt my ability to lead but I assure you, I am more than capable of it. Anyone who wishes to defy this may speak now."

The whole room went into chaos. Men with thick accents shouted and some American leaders stood up yelling at me. A handful of men sat and nodded in agreement while the rest sat patiently looking bored.
