Katniss walked along the stream, sipping on water. She was thinking of allies, Rue, maybe? She dismissed the thought, not wanting it to come down to the 2 of them, but she still had the idea in the back of her head. Peeta, what happened to him? She silently prays the cannon she heard this morning wasn't his. I guess I'll know tonight. she thinks to herself. She continued to walk for hours, hearing no cannons and spotting no other tributes, before deciding to take a break. She sits against a rock, sipping her water, it's around sunset, so she decides to hunt. Even though she didn't have a bow. She used her knife to stab a small rabbit. She skins it and lights a fire. She cooks it quickly and puts her fire out. She eats a few pieces and decides to save the rest. She can't stop thinking of Peeta. Could Cato have killed him already? She's desperate to know if he's gone. She can't wait another second. She harvests some berries, which she recognizes as just blueberries. She pops a couple in her mouth and leans back against a tree. A few minutes later, she stands up and continues walking. She refills her water bottle before she heads off into the woods. She sees in the distance, a tribute with red hair dart by. Foxface. She's clever. Katniss can't stop thinking of Peeta. All she wants to know is if he's safe. Her thoughts are interrupted by the sound of a cannon. If the other one wasn't Peeta, could this one be? She panics. The love of her life could be dead. She holds in her tears, not wanting to appear weak. What would Prim think? Prim. Katniss reminds herself Prim is the reason she must continue. For Peeta and for Prim. The moon is now out, so she finds a tall tree to settle in. She gets into her sleeping bag and tied herself to the tree. The anthem plays, and the Capitol logo appears in the sky. As soon as the anthem ends, Katniss watches anxiously as the 2 faces appear. The first is a young girl with red hair, the District 8 girl, and then the boy who had a crippled foot, District 10 boy. She feels bad for them, but a was so relieved that Peeta hadn't been killed. She lays in her sleeping bag for a while, and eventually, she manages to drift into a dreamless sleep. Only to wake up to a huge wall of fire descending on her.
