Astrid was adored by all of Asgard. As she grew so did the people's love for her. Y/n was pleasantly surprised by this, as she had been worried that the crimes of her father would be held against her. She was an easy baby, and now she was trouble making toddler.
As Y/n had guessed Thor spoiled his niece every chance he got. He absolutely adored little Astrid and she loved spending time with Uncle Thor. She also loved pulling little pranks on her uncle to which Thor would always respond "You are certainly your father's daughter" with a hearty laugh.Astrid took after her father in many ways, but the most obvious similarity was in her love of causing trouble. Never anything serious just harmless things like hiding for long periods of time which would cause worry, or putting a toy snake somewhere it could frighten someone. Her mother had taken to calling her mini mischief.
One day while Thor was on Midgard, a battle had broken out on Vanaheim. Ordinarily it would be Thor's duty to go and return it to peace but Loki actually volunteered to go instead. It seemed like a small battle and so Loki's offer of help was accepted. He gave Astrid a hug and Y/n a kiss before heading off.
Y/n was never really worried when things like this happened. Loki was perfectly capable of handling a small skirmish type of battle like this. He'd fought worse battles and survived so there really wasn't any cause for alarm.
However she did begin to grow nervous when the whole day had passed and he nor Sif and the warriors three had returned. These small types of battles were usually dealt with in just a couple hours sometimes less. Y/n paced in the sitting room after putting Astrid to bed.
Finally Sif came into the room. "My friend what has happened? The battle ought to have been over hours ago." Y/n said.
"Y/n you should sit down. I do not bring any good news." Sif replied solemnly.
Y/n nerves now only grew, she sat as instructed and braced herself.
Sif took a deep breath. "The battle was not as small as previously thought. Vanaheim was practically in a civil war. We all fought valiantly, but none so hard as Loki did. He fought 'til the very end."
"Where is he?" Y/n asked. Fearing she knew the answer to that question. Sif still was not fond of Loki even though he had changed quite a bit since his attack on Midgard. So for Sif to be speaking highly of him now meant something bad.
"Almost no one can sneak up on Loki, especially when he's using magic. I'm sorry but, there was some kind of assassin, no one saw him coming nor could anyone see him flee but, his work was quick. Y/n I'm so sorry, Loki was killed." Sif said.
The words processed quickly in her mind and Y/n physically felt her heart break. She screamed as the tears fell from her face. Sif reached out a hand to comfort her but Y/n only ran out of the room. She ran out into the garden. She fell down next to a tree and just lied on the ground sobbing.
Y/n considered for a moment if perhaps Loki has only faked his death again, but she knew he'd promised not to do that without telling her and he would never put Astrid through something like that. No she was certain he was gone. She sat herself upright against the tree and cried some more. She looked at the ring on her hand and remembered the promise they'd made to each other years ago. "Til death do us part." She whispered to herself. Suddenly she had an idea. It was a stupid idea, and she'd likely get in a lot of trouble for it but she didn't care, she had to do something.
The next morning Y/n gently carried a sleeping Astrid across the rainbow bridge to the bifrost. "I would bid you a good morning but I can see that it is not." Heimdall said as Y/n approached. Her hair was a mess, her eyes very red from crying and under her eyes were dark circles from not sleeping.
"Heimdall I need your help with something." Y/n said. And she relayed her entire plan to him.
"I would try to talk you out of doing something so ridiculous but I can see from the determination in your eyes that that would be impossible." Heimdall said when she finished.
"Will you help me or do I need to use the secret bridges between worlds that Loki showed me?"
"If you are determined to do this I will help you."
"Thank you my friend."
Heimdall opened the bifrost and Y/n took Astrid to Midgard. She wasn't on the Avengers tower just near it. She didn't want them to rush in with weapons because they think it's an intruder. She walked to the tower and rang the bell. "State you're name and your business." Tony's voice came through a speaker.
"It's Y/n, I need to speak with Thor urgently."
She barely finished speaking before all of the Avengers showed up at the front door and practically dragged her in. "Y/n it's good to see you again." Steve said.
"Damn Frosty you look terrible. Who died?" Tony teased.
Y/n had no energy to glare at Tony she only looked at her still sleeping daughter. "My husband." She answered.
"I'm so sorry, Y/n, I was only teasing, I didn't know." Tony was actually apologizing, wow.
"Your apology is accepted Tony. Thor I need your help." Y/n said looking to her shocked brother in law.
"What is it?" Thor asked.
"I need you to take of Astrid while I'm gone." She said handing the child to him.
"Of course, I'll guard her with my life. Sister where are you planning on going?" Thor asked.
Y/n clenched her fists and took a deep breath. "Hel."
