Carrie's POV
Flashback July 15, 1936
It's 12:00 am. I quietly sneak out of my window onto my rooftop. From there, I carefully climb down in the bushes directly below. I creep through the bushes being as silent as possible. I don't wanna wake my daddy. Nowadays, he's a lot weaker, so the last thing I need to do is raise his blood pressure and stress by bein' caught. Once I'm far enough away from my house, I break into a run towards Danny and I's meetin' spot, which is a small between our two farms.
I'm out of breath by the time I arrive. I don't see Danny. I must've beat him here. As I walk through the meadow, I find a blanket spread out on the ground with two glasses and some stolen whiskey. I feel a grin spread across my face.
"Do you like it? I thought we could just watch the stars and maybe try some of my dad's favorite whiskey." I hear from behind me. I turn around to see Danny wearin' an old plaid shirt with ripped and worn work jeans. His hair hung in his face a little, obscuring his forehead, but I could still make out his sparkling brown eyes in the dim lightin'.
"This is awfully romantic for someone like you, Danny." I tease. He grins even wider at my sly remark to his sweet gesture. Danny walks around me and makes his way to the small blanket. I walk behind him and join him in his sittin' position. As soon as I sit next to Danny, I turn to look up at the stars.
The best thing about livin' out in the country is how the night sky is so clear, you can see every single star. I gasp as I see a shootin' star sail across the sky. The last time I saw a shootin' star I was twelve years old and my dad took me out onto our roof to find different constellations. I glance towards Danny with excitement. He was already lookin' at me with a glimmer of some kind of emotion that I usually saw in my daddy's eyes whenever he would talk about mama. It was love. In the dim lightin' I could make out the small blush that spread across his cheeks as he looked away cause I caught him starin'.
"Carrie. I've been meanin' to tell ya somethin'. I don't wanna wait for much longer cause, well we're gonna be graduatin' soon. Besides, I don't know what your plans are after schoolin' and I - " Danny didn't get a chance to finish as I pulled him into a long kiss. He seemed shocked at first but immediately loosened up to the feeling of my lips on his. He instinctively rested his hands on my hips as he deepened the kiss and pulled me forward. It felt too soon when we both had to pull away for air. We rested our foreheads against each other's eyes, it was like Danny finally found his voice and courage in order to mumble these next few words...
"Carrie, I think I've fallen in love with you."

Present Time
Danny's POV
We finally arrive back at the hospital. It looks like it's even more crowded than before. My heart drops when I look down at Carrie's pale, bloodied form in my arms.
"Alright, we can go into the side entrance where we were in before givin' blood. Hopefully, Evelyn is still there to help." Rafe explained. I just numbly nodded my head as we started to move. Luckily, when we arrived at the side door, Sandra was there tending to a few other patients. Rafe loudly banged on the doors which rattled me from my depressing thoughts of losin' Carrie. Sandra threw the door open but froze when she saw Carrie. Rafe pushed past her and pulled me into the small room where I was finally able to set Carrie down on a medical table while Sandra ran to get Evelyn and a Doctor. I made sure I was still holdin' onto Carrie to not only reassure her I was there but to assure myself that she wasn't gone yet. It felt like hours before a doctor finally arrived. I could tell that Carrie didn't have long by the Doc's expression. My eyes were drawn away from Carrie as Evelyn and Sandra burst into the room. Both of them looked pale and frightened. Evelyn attempted to remove me and Rafe from the room, but I wouldn't budge.
It wasn't until Evelyn grabbed my face that I actually listened to her.
"Danny, if you want us to be able to save her, you need to let her go so we can do our job," Evelyn explained. I reluctantly let go and Rafe pulled me from the room. I never took my eyes off of Carrie until the room's door slammed closed in my face.
