Present Carrie's POV
I opened my eyes. Everything seemed... calm. I couldn't hear any planes or bombs or guns. It was almost peaceful. There were big puffy clouds floating above. It reminded me of calm Sunday mornings where Danny would lay with me in a small meadow next to my house and we would try to make shapes out of the clouds. I started to notice a slight ringin' in my ears. I suddenly remember where I was. Out of instinct, I tried to move but I realized the shrapnel as still bearin' down on me. I felt tears start to well up in my eyes from the pain which seemed to slowly start searing throughout my body. I was gonna die here, and I couldn't help but think of Danny.
Danny's POV
Rafe and I rushed to the harbor. I thought the destruction couldn't get any worse, but I was wrong. There were dead bodies fillin' the harbor. I could feel a lump formin' in my throat and dread fill my stomach. I was frozen out of shock. I could feel Rafe pullin' on my arm, but I didn't move. I couldn't move. Suddenly, Rafe grabbed my face and snapped me outta it. Rafe led the way to The Arizona which was turned up on its side and sinkin' fast. We began sprintin' towards one of the many small holes which allow for men to stick their hands through. Each hand looked like it was tryin' to grasp somethin'. Anything to hold onto. One of the men who were usin' a power tool to get the hole wider was frantically yellin' for someone to make sure the hands don't get in the way. I instinctively grab a hand and held onto it firmly to show that person that someone was there. Eventually, the hand I was holdin' went limp, as did all the others. We were too late. Tears began to roll down my face. She couldn't have been in there. She must have made it out before the attack. Maybe she was helpin' somewhere else. Maybe she was still alive. She had to be still alive. She had to be.
I felt someone grab my shoulders and attempt to pull me away from the small hole where all the limp hands slowly sank away, farther into the ship. I finally turn to who was pullin' on my shoulders.
"Danny, we gotta go. The ship is goin' under." Rafe explained calmly and out of breath. I nodded my head and stood up. Rafe and I ran off the sinkin' ship before it could pull us under with it. Once we got off the boat, Rafe and I headed to one of the small beaches which were covered with corpses. Whatever hope I had left that Carrie was still alive was gone. If she was on the Arizona, there's no way she survived. Rafe and I began helpin' move the bodies off the beach. Some of the faces I recognized. Some of these men I had met in trainin' or at the bar. Now they were gone. I get lost in my thoughts until I heard a whimper. I slowly and quietly traced the sound back to the source. The whimperin' grew louder and louder until I find a large piece of shrapnel. The sound was comin' from underneath. I walked around and my heart almost stopped. Carrie was lyin' there, unconscious.
"Carrie! Carrie! Wake up, please! Come on!" I cried as I bent down and gently shook her, but she didn't move. I then tried to move her, but she wouldn't move. She was stuck. I try to move the shrapnel off of her, but it was too heavy.
"Rafe! Rafe! I found her!" I yelled.
Rafe runs over and stops as soon as he sees her. His eyes were wide with shock.
"Rafe! C'mon! I need your help to lift this!" I yelled. Rafe immediately turns and gets into position to help me.
"Alright. Lift on three. One... two... three!" Rafe grunted. With a lot of effort, we managed to move the shrapnel off her. My heart stops when I see a smaller piece of metal lodged in her stomach. There's so much blood. Rafe goes and puts his hand on her wound. I just stand there.
"Danny! Danny, listen to me. We have to get her to the hospital. I need you to carry her while I keep holdin' pressure, okay?" Rafe ordered. I swallowed the lump in my throat and gently lifted her into my arms, bridal style. Her whole body is limp and she looks pale. Too pale. I make eye contact with Rafe, then we both quickly make our way towards the hospital.
