Danny and Rafe left last night for their secret mission for Doolittle, which leaves just Evelyn and me in Hawaii. Today Evelyn said that she had to go to the hospital with the other nurses due to the vast amounts of still wounded soldiers that needed tending. This means I was on my own for the majority of the day.

I figured since I'm going to be cooped up all day in the nursing house, I might be productive. I started my day with menial tasks such as laundry and limited cleaning since I was still confined to the damn wheelchair.

After some chores, I decided to work on walking. My hope is that when Danny comes back, I will be able to run straight into his arms, rather than still barely able to walk. But then again, I don't know when Danny will be back. Better yet, if he will- wait no. I can't think like that. He WILL come back. He has to.

Time Skip ---- 2 weeks later

Danny's POV

Rafe and I have been training with all the other guys in our unit for our suicide mission. Apparently, the planes we are going to be flying over Japan are not going to be very well protected. We were told we had to remove most of the armor plating which protected the engines so we would be able to move quickly to avoid anti-aircraft weapons. This, of course, only added to my already frayed nerves.

Over the past two weeks, I've only gotten one letter from Carrie. This didn't alarm me much because apparently she's been busy with her recovery and helping out with paperwork around the hospital. God, I miss her. I can hardly wait for this mission to be over so we can finally start our life together.

Tomorrow we are starting our mission. I have already written a letter to Carrie just in case, but I hope and pray it doesn't come to that.

Carrie's POV

These past few weeks have been hell. I can't remember a time when I had to do so much paperwork. I've been tasked with filling out the death certificates of those who died in the attack for official records. At first, I didn't want to fill out the certificates because it was still too emotional, however, after filling out the first 25, all my emotions became numb to the traumatic experience of filling out paperwork that could have easily been my own.

After a hard day's work of more paperwork, I arrived back at the nursing house to see all the girls chatting excitedly about something. However, when they saw me, they all immediately went quiet.

"Uh, what's going on?" I asked hesitantly. No one met my eyes and seemed uncomfortable with my question. I was about to ask again before Evelyn stood up and walked toward me.

"Can I talk to you for a minute? Outside?" She whispered. I simply nodded my head before looking around the room once more to find any clue of what everyone had been talking about before I interrupted. Everyone continued to avoid my eyes until I eventually gave up and followed Evelyn out to the porch. When I got outside, I was met with Evelyn's nervous brown eyes. I noticed how she was playin' with her hands, which were shaking.

"Evelyn. What's going on?" I asked worriedly.

"Uhh, I have something to tell you..." She mumbled. I started to fear the worse as she paused.

"Ok? So are ya gonna say it or am I gonna have to stand here for the rest of the day? Just because I'm able to stand now, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt." I joked, trying to edge her along.

"Sorry, right. I want you to know that I didn't tell you because I know you have gone through a lot ever since the attack. I don't want you to be angry with me for-"

"Evelyn. What is it? You can tell me." I interrupted. I know it was rude of me but my legs could hardly stop shaking due to the straining of standing up for a long period of time.

"I'm pregnant." She blurted out. I froze. I was shocked. Not in a bad way, but in a way that caused a tiny ache to erupt in my chest. The kind you feel when someone else gets something that you deserve. A certain type of jealousy that you forbid yourself to feel because of a good thing going to your close friend, so you should be nothing but happy for them. Joyous even. However, I could not crack an overly joyful or heartwarming smile that would reach the very depths of my eyes because deep down I know it would be a lie, an act for the happy parents to be. So, instead, I simply put on a brave face in the form of a small grin and mumbled the words,

"Congratulations, Evelyn. I am so happy for you and Rafe." And with that, I quickly averted my eyes and scurried back into the house to grab myself a glass of whiskey and drown myself in a novel.

The Next Day

Danny's POV

Today's the day. The deciding factor on whether the mission is a success through survival or a failure through destruction. Doolittle has decided to join us on our little bombing excursion over Tokyo. This either means he has great faith in the outcome of our survival, or he simply wants to die a hero's death through a dutiful mission which will go down in history.

Before we board the aircraft, I stop Rafe by grabbing his arm. He turns to meet my eyes with fiery eyes that remind me of the look he used to give me whenever we almost got caught for cheating or goofin' off in school.

"Hey, I have a favor, and I already know you ain't gonna like it, but it's important." I ramble due to my nerves being a wreck because of the short amount of time we have left on the ship.

"I hate it when you talk in that tone Danny," Rafe huffs. His face contrasts from his eyes considerably. The raised eyebrows and formation of a frown shadows his face as I begin to pull out the letter written to Carrie.

"If anything happens, I need you to give this to Carrie. I know, I know. Don't give me that damn look because I'm not bein' paranoid or overly cautious. I'm bein' reasonable. Just promise me, just in case." I plead. The look on Rafe's face darkens considerably as he begrudgingly take the letter from my hand and puts into one of the many pockets in his uniform. Sighin' in relief I give Rafe a pat on his shoulder and a small grin before jumping into the hull of the aircraft while tryin' to suppress the encroaching feeling of dread growin' in my gut.
