Nini and Ricky met when they were five on the first day of kindergarten but then they were Nina and Richard.
Nina skipped into her classroom holding both of her moms' hand pulling them behind her. They got lots of strange looks as they walked in. Nini was too young to realise what was happening but as she grew up she began to understand a lot of people didn't see how they were just a normal family. She was happy to leave her moms and make new friends, she'd always been very sociable but Richard was the opposite. Behind them, Ricky stood behind his dad, gripping his leg.
"I don't want to go, please don't make me go. Where's mom?" Richard pleaded while being pulled away from his dad's leg.
"She had to work. It'll be okay I promise." Mike knelt down to be face to face with Richard and held out his pinky. Richard accepted hesitantly but then threw himself into his dad's arms causing him to topple over and knock into Nini. Mike turned around and got up quickly,
"I am so sorry. I'm Mike and this is Richard" He turned to face Carol and Dana and offered his hand to shake. Carol shook it with a smile as Dana shook her head,
"It's okay, I can tell he's a bit nervous. Nina why don't you go play with Richard." Dana suggested pushing Ninia forward a bit. Nina smiled and grabbed Richard's hand and pulling him over to the toys. He turned back and stared at his dad scared.
"It's okay buddy, go play" Mike assured as he began to talk with Nina's moms.
"Hi I'm Nina!" Nina smiled and offered out her hand to shake like Mike had done with her moms which caused the watching parents to laugh.
"Nin, Neen, Nini" He stuttered frustrated with himself,
"It's Ni-nah" She corrected, Ricky looked up at his dad for support tears threatening to burst out of his eyes.
"Richard struggles to say some letters like a" He explained, Nini looked guilty.
"It's okay, you can call me Nini. I like it" She giggled. Richard smiled and reached out his hand to shake hers.
"I'm Richard" He said feeling accomplished,
"Richard? No one under the age of 50 should be called Richard. If you're calling me Nini, I'll call you... Richie? No. Rich? Also No. Ricky!" She finally reached on his name and shouted it with a smile. He smiled too, he was Ricky now. "Do you want to be bestfriends Ricky?" Nini asked nervously. He nodded excitedly in response. Then turned to his dad. "I'm Ricky now."
"Of course, buddy. I'll see you later" He waved as he left, but Ricky and Nini barely noticed their parents leave they were too happy with their new bestfriend.
Nini had worked hard for a week building her lemonade stand, it was just a table with a blue and white gingham table cloth and a big sign that read: 'Lemonade by Nini. 50 cents.' but she had put her heart and soul into it and was very proud. It was very successful, albeit that meant her moms and Mike had bought most of her lemonade. It was a wednesday and buisness was slow and she was kind of bored sitting alone on her front garden. But if Nini was anything, she was stubborn and Mamma C had told her she would get bored and want to give up eventually; she was determined to prove her wrong. Ricky and Big Red has spent the whole week trying to learn how to skate on the skateboards they had begged their parents for all year. Normally, Ricky would spent most of his week and Nini's house but since she was busy 'working' he had been with Big Red.
"Hey Red, why don't we go see Nini?" Ricky suggested as they lay on the floor of Big Red's basement.
"Of course you want to see her, this is bro time Ricky. You're always with Nini" Big Red sighed in annoyance. Ricky turned to face him with furrowed brows.
