It was a big shock to them both, Rey couldn't stop sobbing. Ben knew he would rather turn into a zombie than go on without Rey. He wouldn't leave Rey all alone in the middle of a zombie infested world even if she had been bite. It didn't make sense as to why she hadn't turned but he didn't care.
Ben pulled Rey into his chest being careful of the cut in her side. Rey was surprised she was so use to people leaving her in the hardest times she wouldn't even blame Ben if he left her because of the risk that she would actually turn into a zombie herself. However if Rey was in Bens position she wouldn't leave him. It wasn't that Rey didn't trust Ben it was rather just because it had been drilled into her.
Ben whispered supportive things into Reys ear telling her that it would be alright and that he would never leave her. After several minutes of crying her eyes out ,along with Ben who had tears rolling down his cheeks as well , the tears finally subsided. Rey still had yet to turn into a zombie.
"I don't want to turn into a zombie Ben I just want to stay with you." Rey said.
"I know Rey, I know. I don't want you to turn into a zombie either I want to stay with you as well. The thing that I don't understand though is why you haven't turned into a zombie yet ,it's meant to happen in the first 10 minutes I have never heard of it taking longer." Ben responded.
Rey slowly drifted off to sleep after all of the emotional exhaustion of the events that had just occurred. Ben was very worried he didn't know if Rey would wake up from her well needed slumber. Ben was tempted to keep her awake but decided against it.
Ben decided to continue the drive to the North maybe they would know why Rey hadn't turned into a zombie yet, maybe they could help her. As Ben drove up North on the desert road he kept glancing at Rey who was still in a deep slumber.
They was signs of a city further up the road to the right and Ben decided it was the best option to have a look, so he pulled off the main desert road and headed into the city. The city was deserted they was nobody around apart from a few heards of zombies that were dotted around. The buildings were boarded up, shop windows were smashed which was a sign that the had been raided and streets lay bare.
Rey was still sleeping soundly as Ben made his way around the maze of streets that made up the city. Rey had been asleep for a few hours now but she still hadn't woken up. Ben still didn't want to wake her as she needed sleep to heal. She still hadn't turned into a zombie which was a good sign as far as anyone was concerned.
As Ben continued through the city he saw some dropped food items which wasn't exactly a sign of anything but then he started to see things that were even weirder. They was footsteps heading to the outskirts of the city, it could be the zombies but Ben still decided to drive down that street and into the outskirts of the city just in case.
Once in the city outskirts Ben saw cars that were parked up in almost a line blocking the road. The cars looked like a barrier to stop zombies getting passed. Ben thought that it was very curious he knew that like him and Rey they would still be a few people that would have protect places to live but this was very odd.
They was a loud noise that starteled Ben and startled Rey awake. Rey groaned and pressed a hand to her side as she got up. Ben was glad that Rey was awake and still very much a human. Neither of them knew what the loud noise was until they heard a voice.
"Welcome to the refuge you will be welcomed if you are not infected and are human. This is a place to keep the human race alive."
Ben and Rey looked at each other in surprise the voice had came from a speaker. They had actually found the special haven that was up north. They had found a place that they could stay that was better than their small fortress in Jakku.
"We have found it Rey." Ben smiled.
"I'm so happy Ben but they said that they welcome people that are not infected and I'm technically infected. "
"But Rey you haven't even turned into a zombie that means you probably won't it's like you are immuned or something. Maybe they will let you in so they can see how you have managed not to turn. You could be the key to saving everyone Rey if Infact you have something in your immune system that fights the zombie virus." Ben said.
Ben got out of the drivers Side after making sure that they was no zombies about then went over to the passager side door. He opened Reys door and carefully carried her out after she had undid her belt. Rey closed the door with her hand before Ben carried her over to the line of cars. They was a very small gap that someone had opened to let them both through. As soon as they had got through the gap they were greeted by a circle of people.
"Hello there, my name is Obi Wan welcome to the refuge."
"Obi Wan, Obi Wan Kenobi? My mother was Leia Organa-Solo she said she use to work with a man with your name." Ben said in surprise.
Leia had talked to Ben about her work as a scientist when he was a boy, she use to tell him how her and her fellow scientists use to work and discover things. She often talked about Obi Wan saying how he was a great scientist and friend.
"Ben? I can't believe it when I heard what happened to Leia I thought that maybe all of your family had perished but apparently not. It's nice to finally meet you. And who is this with you?"
"This is my girlfriend Rey." Ben said proudly.
Bens words surprised Rey but they also made her heart want to burst.
