Remember Me

I walked around town, catching up with some buddies from the dorm. My best friends in the world, Lily and Randy, called me up to celebrate on getting a job. In reality I was naturally a flaky guy, I just did well enough to pass school, I didn't care much for a relationship, or more so an intimate one. I was just like I'd said an average every day Jo.

"So man you finally got a job and a place all to yourself." Randy grabbed onto my shoulder pulling me in for a picture. Lily the photographer smiled as she looked at the finished product of us two.

"Ya its not all that great, but it will do." I drank my beer, being legal had its perks you know.

"Man I can't wait till I get out of school." She was thick and stood abut 5 foot 5 inch. Small but very curvaceous, you could thank her hips and incredibly large breasts. Her long brunette hair suited her long slender neck. Her eyes were unusually honey colored. She always wore low tops, since she was underage those monsters came in handy.

"Lily you know one day somebody is going to look at you and be like damn." Randy was a flake like me but more than anything a light weight. He was drunk after two beers. He started getting loud, yelling at anyone who walked in the door. "Hey--Hey you. Ya you! The one with the face. Ya come here I got something to say." And that was that, out like a light.

I got home around 11, sat on the couch and looked at my dog, I named him Roger after my grandfather. The only normal thing about me was my dog. He seemed to make me less of a flake when I walked him, I'd meet a pretty girl she'd want to get coffee. She'd ask my interests, I couldn't help but be honest :Vampires. That was the last phone call.

I went to sleep, and dreamt of the most beautiful woman. She had long dark hair and auburn colored eyes. She had a smile that would draw you in. I knew who she was, but who was she. She kept saying, "Remember me..please remember me." I tossed and turned, waking up to a buzz at 5 in the morning. Damn, work.

I poured myself some two day old coffee, and heated it in the microwave my mother so graciously bought me. I walked down four blocks to a tall brick building. The Weekly Eagle. I sat at my desk drawing those eyes. Round and open, lost and scared, sexy and kind. Who was she? "Hey man!" I jumped clear out of my seat looking at a man in dark slacks and a yellow button up. Professional even for a crumby job like this.

"I'm Nathaniel, but people call me Nathan. Call me what you prefer. I don't really care much for this job, but it helps pay bills." He put out his hand, I shook it still trying to wake up.

"Yo. I'm Aaron." He nodded, he probably knew that, I'm pretty sure he was the one I'd have to watch my back for. He'd do anything for a juicy scoop.

"So why are you here? Isn't your dad like the billionaire." I was right I nodded. Why was I here? Her voice lead me here, that word that still tingled when I said it.

"Because." I sat back down, he made himself comfortable sitting on my desk. Okay so he was a jackass. Fine given, I guess everywhere you'd go in life you're bound to run into one.

By lunch I had met essentially everyone in the office except one woman who hadn't made herself known until I'd accidentally ran into her. "Watch it you creep." She got down on her knees our eyes meeting. They were clear and soupy like fresh water. Her hair was cropped short and she had a beautiful smile.

"What are you looking at?" She snatched the papers from my hand. Damn, what a way to start off a career.

"Uhhh oh nothing," I jogged down the hallway to catch up with her.

"Clearly you want something, so what is it." She stopped and looked at me, really looked at me, circled around me like a vulture. "Do you remember me?" that voice didn't match, but she knew who I was.

"Uhhh not really I'm sorry to admit. I mean who wouldn't remember a beautiful face like yours." She blushed, and there was a beautiful smile. I'm sure I'd seen her somewhere.

"Diana Reeves. I was your next door neighbor from elementary until high school." She pushed her hair behind her ear.

"OH yes, I remember. How could I for get my first kiss." I covered my mouth, she smiled at me. She wasn't the one, she'd think I was a creeper if she asked what I was into.

So work wasn't too bad, made a friend or reconnected with one. I asked if she'd wanted to come over, her eyes lit up. We ate pizza and watched old cartoons, catching up on our missed years. "Okay so I've never told anyone this, but I can trust you."

I nodded eagerly, maybe she had a weird obsession with vampires and she could love me. "Okay shoot." That grin of hers made saying anything easy, liked she'd never judge you.

"Well I hunt vampires." I felt the pepperoni get lodged in my throat. I drank my beer. It pushed it down. I smiled fake as her nails. This was bad, I meant really bad. I knew somehow this would turn out bad.

"That is cool." I imagined her in some tight pants and a low cut top, carrying a giant wooden stake on her back and have holy water tablets. She was bad ass, just like when we were kids.

I was right about the obsession. But she was on the wrong team. There was nothing wrong with being a vampire, I'd wished to be one myself. To have special abilities, to find my prey through the mind. To say open wide and take a bite.
