It was so early and dark when that knock came, ringing through my apartment, that fearful knock. Amber clung to my arm, hiding behind me. "We don't have to do it this way." I didn't look into her eyes, it made the separation so much easier. "Be safe." Amber's eyes glowed a hollow yellow. She walked away out to our room and slammed the door shut.
"Good-bye." I locked the door and walked out my house into the dawning of a bright sunrise. It was beautiful, one thing I'd miss if I'd ever be given the chance to live forever with her.
"So that is your girlfriend?" She wrapper her slender arms through the gap in my arm. Her short bob was an amazing compliment to her angelic face. Those swampy green eyes shimmered like dewy drops in the morning light.
"Yeah she is." I felt the heat rise to my cheeks, I was not embarrassed just scared I'd let it slip out. "Sorry about the attitude this morning. She is cranky when she doesn't receive enough sleep." She giggled, her grey pea-coat matched her boots.
"Oh well she was absolutely gorgeous I must say." It was a quiet walk, there were bodies burning, and others hanging from way up high. The war was a simple seed of destruction, only meant to stop one person not kill and destroy the lively hood of the world. "It wasn't supposed to turn out like this."
It was cold and the streets were silent, when footsteps small like a child were headed for us. A little girl with blonde curly hair rushed behind my legs. She was about seven, her eyes were blood red. Two men of about my age came running at me with the same gun that Diana carried at her hip. Both muscular in build and dark brown hair. They wore the same cloth-like material, and scowl on their faces.
"Sir I will ask you only once to move out the way or I'll be forced to take your life." He held the gun at me, I didn't waver or move. "Sir please move."
"I cannot let you kill an innocent girl." They both laughed, at me until they saw Diana. They got on one knee and bowed. So she was the one that they called "master".
"She killed a man."
"You idiots this little girl is hungry. You wouldn't understand the griping pain, you act like she wants to kill." She looked up, the red had finally faded, her beautiful blue eyes looked up at me.
"I got really hungry...they told me the only way I'd survive was if I drank blood. I didn't want to, but it got too strong and I lost control." She held onto my leg. She had a shy and timid voice, but spoke with more eloquence than most men six times her age.
I knelt down and looked into her eyes. "Honey I have to take you with me, but I won't let you get hurt." She took my hand and obeyed.
"Diana I can't let you hurt her, I have a solution and I know it will work but you need to trust me." She looked at me but essentially agreed with my demands. The sun had risen considerably faster than expected. I put her on my back and covered her with my coat, she went to sleep. Her deep breathing and quiet snore was peaceful and calmed my nerves.
We reached a large stone building, the guards were all dressed the same. It was frightening, to think these civilians would take the life of another with no regards. "You ready?" 'NO for God's sake no. I can't do this. I think I will die.'
"Yes of course. I have a job to do and I plan on keeping it to it." She smiled and kissed my cheek, I felt the corner of my lip crinkle into a smile.

We walked down many hallways hopped on an elevator and stopped on floor number 17. "Hi daddy." Pushing open a large cedar door, there was the most exquisite office. She curtsied low and deep. He was an average looking guy, dark brown hair, a button up suit and an easy going smile.
"So this is the "Peace Bringer", kind of pitiful. I don't see how he can stop anything." He crossed his arms and sat down in the leather chair.
"Sir. I want to let you know that I do have a solution." I was terrified, my breathing go shallow as more men and women walked in dressed in clean cut suits. I scanned the room and made eye contact with the familiar graying eyes. "Dad?!"
'I am going to be sick, I am going to screw up and humiliate him.' He looked at me, his steel eyes nodded, he sensed my every fear. There was a slight tug on my finger. "I am hungry." She pointed to her near protruding fangs. 'Is this my sign, that I won't fail?'
"Will you help me?" Those water blue eyes, so sad and hollow. She nodded. "Okay good, all you have to do is drink this. I showed her the bottle.
A booming voice commanded our attention, Diana's father, all the leaders sat down. No one made a sound. "This here is "The Peace Bringer". He comes here with an idea." He swept his old arm towards me, a light hit me. I felt uneasiness wash over. "Come show us your idea."
I walked with the little girl directly at my feet, I heard the snickering of others, the crack in my voice set it off. "So it took me a while to finally see it but last night I was talking to a good friend of mine about how to curb hunger." Diana smiled at me, even in the darkness she shined. "Well they suggested an alternative to the real thing. So it hit me like bricks---animal blood." Of course these were all lies, and I hope no one knew it. I couldn't explain that I just happened to feed my girlfriend and best friends pig blood. I saw a woman cover her mouth.
"Okay honey what's your name?" I knelt down and whispered, she shook her head, she didn't remember. "Can I call you Robin?" She smiled, "Robin here is very hungry and I know this is not for the weak hearted but please stay and watch." I poured the thick red mess into a cup and she did the same thing amber did before, but when she looked at me she smiled.
"May I have some more?" She cocked her head to the side, blood trickling down her chin. I nodded, one more glass. The same thing.
"Robin how do you feel?" Looking around she stopped, a tear fell from her eyes. I watched as she stared at some lady with long blonde hair, they looked alike. That was Robin's mother.
"I no longer feel hungry. Thank you." I took her small hand in mine and we sat back down. Thunderous clapping and discussion followed. The woman came over and gave me a hug.
"Her name is Maggie, this is my little girl." Maggie didn't seem to recognize this woman. "Hun, I love you so much and I wish I could have protected you. We will be together I promise you that." We shook hands and Maggie and I sat in that room until night fell. She slept on one of the stage steps, my jacket as her blanket.
We ate--well more so I ate finally and got my coffee. It was warm and full of the life that I wish I had left in me. Diana explained that the plan was to give me a week to get to the Drake Villa and talk things over with Sir Drake and then report back. If all went well there would have been no war, and the lives lost would have been all for the damning.
