K: hey Mattia. Sorry I didn't come over yesterday, I got caught up at work. I talked to your mom though and she said there wasn't any change anyways. I'm here today though, and I've got about four hours before I have to go.
Kairi sighed.
Even after a full month, Kairi still expected Mattia to open his eyes and tell him off for waking him up, or make fun of his height, or literally anything. Anything would be better than nothing.
The short boy pulled up the chair and placed it beside the bed, taking Mattia's limp hand into his own.
K: I miss you Mattia. I know I say it every day but I really really miss you. I feel like I don't remember the sound of your voice anymore and that scares me.
Kairi curled Mattia's fingers around his own, willing him to wake up.
K: wake up Mattia. I know that you can. You're brain works now, you're healed. So, wake the fuck up.
Kairi was getting more and more upset and desperate every time he walked into the hospital, only to hear the steady beeping of the heart monitor and the hissing of the ventilator.
K: wake up Mattia. Wake up, wake up, wake up. I don't care if there's a bright shiny light. Fight it. Come back to me. Because I can't do this without you. Wake up Mattia please, do it for me. Wake up, please come back to me.
Kairi didn't even realize that he had started crying until his hot tears splashed onto Mattia's cold hand, still entertained with Kairi's own.
K: wake up you stupid fucking dinosaur.
Kairi laughed at his own joke before he sighed again. He wiped his tears on his sweater sleeve before putting on a smile.
K: oh well, I tried. Anyways, lemme tell you about this asshole from work, he's literally the worst person ever......
Kairi continued to tell Mattia about his day, about his life, about literally anything that came to his mind. He would envision Mattia's responses, laugh at his own jokes. Kairi was trying to achieve some sense of normality even though his best friend was currently lying, unresponsive in a hospital bed.
After a few hours, Kairi checked his phone to see that visiting hours were nearly over. He finally let go of Mattia's hand, placing it gently back on the bed.
K: I gotta go now Matti. I'll be back tomorrow and when I walk through these doors, your ass better be awake, got it?
Kairi had been saying those exact same words for almost a month now, and nothing changed, but he still said them every time he left because he carried the hope that one day Mattia would be awake and ready to greet him.

tHe NeXt DaY........
Kairi trudged wearily through the hospital. He made the same trek every single day he possibly could. Grabbing a coffee in the lobby, stopping at the elevators, pressing the button to go to the fourth floor, passing the countless rooms in the hospital wing before he got to Mattia's room. He paused for a moment outside the door, thinking of what he would talk to Mattia about today. He pushed open the door, not even looking towards the bed because he knew he'd see the same sight as any other day.
K: hey Mattia I'm back, just like I always am. I forgot money so I-
Kairi heard a small shuffle and his gaze snapped up, he almost passed out when Mattia's deep brown eyes were staring straight back at him. Kairi took a step back, his hands covering his mouth.
K: I'm dreaming?
M: no
K: I'm dead?
M: no
K: I'm high?
M: no Kai. I'm awake. I'm back.
Kairi's mind was racing at a mile per minute but all of a sudden he stopped thinking. He ran across the room and practically jumped into Mattia's arms. He was squealing like a child but he didn't care. The angle of the bed made it a slightly awkward hug but neither boy cared as they held eachother tightly.
After a few minutes of silence Kairi spoke quietly.
K: I missed you.
M: I know, you told me every day.
Kairi pulled away from the hug, sitting down in the chair that was already beside the bed.
K: you could hear me?
M: yep, and-
Mattia leaned over and lightly punched Kairi's arm.
M: -that, is for calling me a "stupid fucking dinosaur"
Kairi smiled sheepishly while Mattia grinned down at him.
K: it worked though didn't it? You should be thanking me. If I didn't call you a dinosaur, you might not be awake right now. When did you wake up? Why didn't they call me?
M: I woke up last night around midnight. And I asked them not to call you, I wanted to surprise you.
K: consider me surprised.
M: for real though, I heard everything. Like everyyythinggggg. You literally never stop talking.
K: well I didn't hear you interrupting me hmm?
M: thank you for visiting me Kai. It was kinda scary, I could hear and think but I couldn't move or open my eyes. So yeah. Thanks for staying with me all this time.
K: of course. You're my best friend Mattia. I'll always be here. But don't ever try this shit again. Coma really isn't a good look for you.
Mattia laughed which caused Kairi to laugh as well and everything was happy.
Everything was fine.
