"NINE. . . EIGHT. . ."
The more seconds have passed, the more I feel every part of my body becoming paralyzed. Just by seeing the horrified look on (Y/N) and Yugyeom's faces gives me a certainty of who the person is outside this door, with the sounds of his footsteps against the creaking floorboards sending goosebumps crawling up my back.
"Seven. . . Six. . . Five—oh, look what we have here. . . Ah, my assumptions are correct."
"Welcome, Doctor."
(Y/N)'s eyes enlarge in shock, her eyes then filling with tears as she grits her teeth. It takes a short while for me to realize that (Y/N)'s grandmother did not really have dementia. She is faking it, so she'd have us pity her and lure us in until they would come for us. My fists clench when I hear the Doctor speak.
"Are you certain that they do not have any means to escape the place?"
"Yes, of course. I even lured my daughter's child with her bloody, dimwitted fools. Such a stubborn brat. I cannot even look at her in the eyes."
"A pity, Mrs. (L/N). I give you my condolences for the misfortune that has befallen on your daughter. It was a marriage in vain, was not it?"
"They deserve the suffering. After all, the child shall make up for her parents' mistakes by taking part in Hanryeo's experiments. She does not deserve these kaleidoscopic eyes. It is still an honor to have the augmentation pass down the bloodline."
"Your most welcome, although, I might say, my Forces are here to take you."
"What—take me?!"
"I apologize, Mrs. (L/N). Your years of serving me during post-apocalypse, I'm afraid, has come to an end. Your daughter unfortunately died giving birth to the offspring, that is why her child shall be just useful as I have not finished with the test yet."
"But, Doctor! This—this is not part of the agreement—"
"You are wise enough to know your own place, Mrs. (L/N). Hearing you say that you cannot bear to look at your daughter's child, lest give her away to us, is such an act of immorality—"
"She is a product of an undignified man! A disappointment!"
I turn to (Y/N). I didn't know what to do at the sight of her forcing herself not to cry in front of us. I had no idea that the last person of her family would give her away like this. I was too scared to even touch or call her name, and yet I couldn't let her build those walls around her again that I've been trying to break down.
"That is why I forced my daughter to send her to the orphanage, away to Daegu! I cannot consider a child whose father is someone that kills people—"
"I myself would not allow my own son to be in danger." There is the sound of a gun being reloaded. "You see that the two of us are very much alike, but at the same time we are a lot different. We are hungry for eternal power, but I only wish as such for my loved one. . . unlike you who longs for power, but only for your own benefit."
BANG.
"Have a Sprite, Mrs. (L/N)."
(Y/N)'s eyes are closed shut, her hands shaking and I then was about to take her hand when she sprints down the stairs away from us. Taehyung calls after her in a hiss and follows her, so Yugyeom and I trail behind, and right after we sheer to the rooms I hear the door behind us break open. (Y/N) has just entered the first room and locks herself in.
