Chapter Forty Five
Two weeks go by and I feel myself start to get complacent, I'm so busy enjoying myself, and enjoying Aiden, that I forget to worry about much besides the date he has planned for us tonight.
Carla and I are shopping for a new outfit because I have absolutely nothing to wear; her words, and have just taken a break.
"You find us some seats and I'll grab the food." She suggests and wanders off while I look over the malls packed food court to find an empty table.
When I spot one, I don't pause on my mission to acquire said table before someone else grabs it and I'm feeling pleased with myself for succeeding.
"She is a pretty thing isn't she?" My smile drops from my face and I whirl around in my chair to find Mike standing behind me, flanked by his two best soldiers.
The same two who I had first met in Mrs Potts house. The same two who I had seen countless times afterwards, whether they were coming to pick me up and take me to see Mike, or whether they were driving him around to see me.
Ian and Riley had been with Mike for as long as I'd known him and he trusted them with all his important shipments, including me.
He really should've have though; Riley had on more than one occasion expressed his desire to have me all to himself. He didn't say this in front of Ian; who had taken a slightly different liking to me - more protective, and he definitely didn't say it with Mike in hearing range.
"Mike."
I glance to where is gaze is centred and feel disgust lick heatedly against my skin. He was staring at Carla, who was unaware and smiling flirtatiously to the guy serving her over the counter.
"I mean, she's not you, but she would do in a pinch." His dark murderous eyes are glaring at me now and I lean back into the chair, my back digging into the side of the table.
"You really thought you could hide from me again. Did you think I'd forgotten about you, that I haven't been circling the house you're staying in, waiting for you to leave."
"You might not have left, but the rest of your new 'family'" he sneers "have, and it would be so easy to hurt any number of them... or have you replaced with this younger model." He flicks his hand in Carlas direction.
"Please," I start but the look he gives me has me pressing my lips together.
"I don't want her. I want you... but you know what I can do if I'm left waiting for too long." He leans down into my face, and I wonder if anyone around us has noticed the threatening stance he has over me.
No one is looking our way, consumed in their own lives and paying no attention to anything going on outside their bubble.
"Ian and Riley will be watching over your house today, just incase you decide to do something stupid. You know what to do, don't you precious." He whispers menacingly and I nod.
It was always the same way with Mike, if I had to come to him, he would send someone to come pick me up and bring me to him when he was ready.
"I understand Mike."
"That's why you're my best girl. I'll send a car for you, don't have me waiting."
........
They've disappeared before Carla has returned, struggling with a full tray before she sets it down and starts gushing about the guy who had served her.
"I mean he's really cute... but he's no Matt." Her eyes become dreamy and I look over her young, innocent face. She was only 14, and I know I would do anything to make sure she was never harmed.
"Did I get you the wrong thing?" She asks worriedly down at my untouched plate.
"No, I'm just not feeling very well, you think we could call it a day."
.......
"You guys are home early, did you find something to wear for tonight?" Sam walks into the kitchen just in time to see us walking back through.
Lucas drops the car keys on the kitchen counter after picking us up, and opens the fridge in search of a snack.
"No, Alex isn't feeling too well so we just came home. There's plenty of stuff in her closet though," Carla turns her concerned gaze back to me "I'll help you find something nice later, you just get some rest and feel better okay?" She'd been kindly checking on me throughout the entire journey home.
So much that Lucas finally broke and told her to stop and that if I felt like I was going to faint I would let her know.
I pass Jamie on the way up to my room and he asks if I would like some tablets bringing up; news always spread quickly in this house.
I'm wondering what the hell I'm supposed to do, and thinking to myself the other shoe had finally dropped, only instead of the Spencer's leaving me, it seems I'm going to have to leave them.
My door opens a little while later but I can't move my eyes from the dark car in the distance of the drive, knowing who was in it and what they would do if they even had an inclination that I was betraying their boss.
"Hey baby, I wanted to come check on you, how are you feeling?"
I feel Aidens arms wrap around me and react quickly; stepping out of his grasp and walking out of the view of my window.
If I could see them, maybe they could see me. I wouldn't want to imagine what Mike would do if he knew I had been with someone else, that I actually loved that person.
Aiden furrows his eyebrows at me, taking a tentative step closer and when I don't move, wraps his arms around me again, sighing in relief.
"Is it your head? Your stomach, do you need a massage? Food? Medicine..." I laugh forcefully at his concern.
"I'm just tired and my head hurts, I don't need anything. Just being in your arms is enough." I breathe in his scent, letting myself be consumed by it, to feel safe in his arms.
"Maybe we should postpone tonight, just until you're feeling better." I nod in agreement and feel even worse that his plans have been ruined.
"I'm sorry." I whisper.
I'm so so sorry...
"It's fine, It's just a date. We'll have plenty of time for you to make it up to me." He chuckles, the vibrations running along my chest.
I lean up and press my lips to his, I try with everything in me to push all my love, all my regret, all my sorrow into this kiss.
"That's a great start." He laughs, before bringing his head down again.
I don't want to let go, but the longer I wait, the less likely I am to go through with this and then I'm condemning my whole family.
......
I walk out the back door, lucky no one is around to question me, and walk to the second dark car that had turned up. I knew it was the car that would be taking me to Mike.
"Get in Alex." Ian says devoid of emotion.
"The other team has arrived to keep watch, and shes with us now, I'll keep you up to date on any issues." He speaks into his phone. He's talking to Mike.
I wonder how long I'll have to spend with him tonight, will he bring me back in time to not arouse suspicion from the Spencer's, like he used to with Derek.
I try not to think about what's going to happen to me, it's been a while but I'm sure I can retreat into my mind again long enough for him to have his fill and send me on my way.
At least I hope I can.
