Joshua's POV

~five years ago, over summer break~

"I didn't hear anything." Jennifer said. Kelsie looked from me to Jeniffer before shrugging.

"Me neither." She said.

"But-But someone screamed?" I said, not sounding so sure myself.

"What's going on out here?" My mum said, coming outside and glancing between us.

"Joshua heard someone scream but no one else did." Kelsie said, blunt as always.

"A scream?" My mum asked, sounding shocked.

I nodded, feeling slightly foolish. "An ear-splitting scream." I said. My mum looked down at me, worry evident in her face.

"I need to tell you a story Joshua." She said after a moment, grabbing my hand and leading me back inside the house.

"What story?" I asked, sitting on the couch across from my mum.

"It's called the Nightmare's Calling." My mum said, sighing deeply. "And it's a scary story. But you have to hear it."

I nodded after a second, allowing my mum to continue. After all, it was just a story.

"According to legend, a curse was placed on a boy. A young, pure-blooded wizard. The wizard had done something-it's never said what-but he did something, upsetting the Gods Of Magic.

"The Gods Of Magic cursed the wizard at once, forcing his spirit out of his body and into the winds. It is said that his spirit created the dementors, whether this is true or not no one knows."

"And the story?" I interrupted. "Is the story true?"

My mum sighed again. "I don't know. They say it's a myth. But, supposedly, the wizard's spirit screams when something truly horrible is about to happen."

"How come Jennifer and Kelsie didn't hear it?" I asked. My mum looked at me apologetically.

"According to the myth it can only be heard by a select, seemingly random, few."

~present day~

I couldn't help but remember the story my mum had told me. After I had heard the scream Sirius Black had broken out of Azkaban, and while we had later found out he was innocent, his break out still proved that the Wizarding World's prison, which held the most dangerous criminals, was not invincible. That they could escape.

"Joshua! Come on!" Ernie said. "I don't know why Harry, Ron, and Hermione ran out of here but we have to go!"

"I-I can't." I said, suddenly realizing. "I-I have to help."

"What?!!" Ernie demanded.

But I was already gone.
