34 | if the shoe fits

An ode to the good times; snuggles
nestled in warm blankets, smiles
worn cheek to cheek.

Honey-glazed eyes and sit atop
scarlet flushed noses as the weather
chills down in notches.

I feel like a foreigner here;
all bundled up in your affection.
While iced sweets' a heart's declaration
remain untouched - a blissful contradiction.

Your love feels like the sting of hot
water blasting onto frozen limbs
- never managing to heat me to my core
but even yet - i still adore.

Or do I? as your gifts pour out in false illusion
led by a marching band of high collusion -
of love in false hope of a fairytale ending,
never thinking that it could all be undue,
just like my unfitting love for you.

The shoe.

No matter how much you prod and squeeze
me till' my limbs collapse and shudder, our
love will never matter. Shatter the superficial
elements of the relationship to their core
with a clatter.

Shards of glass from champagne toasts fall
as the unperturbed raise shocked hands to faces.
I make haste and escape the yuletide ball -
the chambers I am confined to - but what I wish
will not satisfy me, I need to escape it all.

Your affection, your hands, your love, your ease,
can you see my forced smile as I say 'cheese'?
Behind my expressions of glee lies guilt
- I need to find real love; please let me leave.

Hey guys! I am really quite proud of this poem in particular. I wrote it as sort of a parody/ spin off to cinderella, whereby I used quotes and symbols from the adaptations to fit in the perspective of an unhappy relationship, in which the person (subject) wants love, but needs to be eased into the process, rather than be overwhelmed by superficial gestures. Hope you enjoyed it! ((:
