The cool autumn air danced around me as I entered The Diner to start my day off right.
The doors closed behind me and the sweet smell of waffles and coffee filed my nostrils. Heaven on earth. I thought walking past the tables and towards the counter.
“Someone’s in a good mood.” Zach remarked. His usually messy hair was a little bit more messy than usual and his dark brown eyes had light bags underneath them. I’m not exactly prom queen at school and this is my usual hang out place. Zach might even be my closest friend.
As I turned to walk away I felt a tug on my shirt. Looking down I saw little Harvey standing in front of me a little bewildered.
“Hey, buddy. What’s wrong?” I asked him whilst picking him up.
“Mommy sad. She crying.” He said looking at me with huge puppy eyes.
Looking around I found Michelle sitting in the same booth the sat in yesterday with her head in her hands. I didn’t want to disturb so I just put Harvey down next to her. A hand grabbed my arm while I was turning. I looked up into Michelle’s ocean eyes and I swear I was drowning.
“Stay...please.” she pleaded with teary eyes. I nodded and took a seat in front of her. It was kind of awkward and I didn’t know what to say.
“I must be looking a mess huh?” she asked in a thick scottish accent. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the fact that she was speaking to me.
“Uh.. no. No, you just seem... hurt?” I answered slowly, careful not to trigger anything.
“James left this morning and he didn’t even bother to say goodbye. I must sound so pathetic. But he’ll be gone for two whole months working on a new movie and here I am. Lonely as always.” She shook her head and the tears rolled down her red cheeks again.
I reacted without thought and wiped her tears off before they could fall to the ground. Her left hand reached for mine on her cheek and held it there.
“If you ever need company. You’ve got my number.” I said smiling.
“You’re sweet, but aren’t you late for school?” she asked curiously and for a moment I was brought back to reality.
“FUCK! I am yes.” I screamed heading for the door.
“Wait. I’ll drive you.” I heard from behind me and before I could stop myself I was in the passenger seat of Michelle’s car heading towards my school.

After school I decided to go check up on Michelle and Harvey to see if she might be feeling better than before.
I knocked on the door and a few seconds later it opened to reveal Michelle looking as good as she did the other day. Which was a good thing, I think...
“Hey. Uhm, sorry to bother you. I just came by to see how you were doing after this morning.” I tried my best to stay focused and not get lost her ocean eyes.
“Come on in.” She smiled a Cheshire cat smile and stepped out of the doorway, giving me space to enter. I did that and looked around the house again. It was way bigger than I remembered. Or it just looked bigger during the day.
“Want something to drink?” Michelle asked and headed towards the kitchen I followed her through the quiet house.
“Where’s Harvey?” I finally mustered through the awkward silence that fell between us.
“Derek – my brother – took him for the weekend. So it’s just me. All alone. In this huge house.” She started trailing off at the end.
“All alone in this huge house. How will you ever survive?” I asked in an over dramatic tone and threw my right hand over my forehead being too dramatic.
“Oh, shut up.” She laughed and playfully punched my arm.
“No, but seriously. How are you going to keep yourself entertained?” I asked leaning onto the table we sat at. Her eyes travelled towards my exposed cleavage but as soon as her eyes reached the desired destination my phone rang and her eyes snapped back towards mine.
“You should probably get that...” she said and turned to make us some coffee.
I took my phone out of my bag and saw my mother’s name flash on the screen. “Hello.” I said and waited for her to scowl me for not being home yet.
“Lily, darling. I might not be home till really late tonight I have a project at home I have to finish up on. Would you manage on your own?”
“If it’s okay with you I could have a sleepover at Zach’s?” I really hated being home alone for so many reasons.
“Or you could crash here?” Michelle whispered and it caught me completely off guard.
“Lily? Are you still there?” my mother asked.
“Ye-yeah. Uhm.. is it okay if I stay over at the Davenport’s instead?”
“Sure. Just as long as you’re safe. Okay? I love you loads, but I have to go.” She said and the line went dead immediately after.
