Annie's p.o.v

When Shawn pulled up to our driveway, I spotted an unfamiliar vehicle near Angela's house. Our parents have been friends since forever and have worked together on many projects. You would think that our houses - no, mansions- were just perks of their success. It was, but not just from their companies...

Three days after my father passed away, I was told by my mother that he was part of a mafia organization, the co-leader to be exact. I was not shocked nor surprised when I found out about it.

Actually, everything started to add up: my fighting classes with Jack, the men that would guard our home, the different balls they would host or attend...

The tension had always been there, I just hadn't realized it yet. Maybe I didn't want to!

We stepped out of the car and headed inside. Inside we were met with Mr. and Mrs. Doherty and my mother chatting in the living room. Their attention turned to us and mom smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes.

"There they are!" Mom said and we went to sit down. Shawn sat down next to me on the couch in front of them.

"How have  you been?" I asked Angela's parents. It had been a week since I had last seen them, considering that they went on a business trip.

"We have been good, thank you sweety!" Her mom smiled at me.

"How was the trip?" Shawn asked.

"Good. We actually came here to invite you to have dinner tonight at our place so we can talk some matters about the trip." Mr. Doherty said and I checked the time. Damn it! I was late to see Ricky.

"I have to go right now, but I'll be back on time for dinner." I got up and went to my room to change. I could not race in my training clothes. It was still early for dinner so I had enough time to shower before I went out to meet with Angela.

I got ready earlier than her, so I went to the garage and took out my car. The dim light that sneak through the curtains gave you the illusion that the car was on fire, in addition to it's  color. I still remember when dad had bought it for me.

"Hey! Are you coming?" Angela said. She must've gotten in the car while I was busy being a pity party inside my mind.

"Yes!" I started the engine and I welcomed its sound.

"We have to come home earlier this time!" She said while scrolling thru her phone.

"Yeah, I know! Your parents have invited us to dinner!" I took a left turn  and left our neighbourhood.

"That's not the only reason tho!" She sounded paranoid. I briefly glanced at her.

"Why would you say that? Do you have a hot date with Shawn or something?" I teased her and she flipped me the finger.

"I wish!" She said in a dreamy voice. She has had a crush on him since forever but he never made a move. I intend to change that.

"Then what is it?" I asked more serious this time.

"My brother has returned home! I don't want him to give us a lecture about how we shouldn't be involved in illegal racing!" She rolled her eyes at the last one.

"That's ridiculous!" I turned to her. "He does know that we're in the freaking mafia, right?"

"Yes, he does! It just hasn't gotten through his thick skull." She sighed.

"How old is he again?" I asked. I had never met him due to him being in England.

"22!"

"Right! I forgot he is Shawn's best friend." I confessed.
