VI. Exposed Interior

~Kura's POV~

We've been running after Satotz-san for almost 4 hours now here on a seemingly endless tunnel. Many examinees, including Leorio, are already gasping for breaths as they struggle in following where our examiner will lead us.

Gon, who is somewhat ahead of us doesn't seem to mind how long we've been running. He even looked like he's enjoying especially now that he met a new friend with the same age as his.

Running beside him is Killua, a silver haired boy whom we met a while ago. I can see Gon's alive and energetic smile as he and Killua did their chitchat while running. I can't help but smile. They seem to go along really well.

My eyes caught a familiar bulky figure also a distant ahead from me and Leorio. It was Tompa holding a can of drink different from what he offered us earlier, and beside him is the blonde little girl. She accepted the beverage from him and immediately drank it.

She wobbled after drinking and fell on her knees. The next thing is that she's already lying on the floor. I'm quite sure it has something to do with the drink offered to her. Tompa has been trying to trick us all along then, we have to be more cautious next time.

"Hehe. First one down." Said one of the examinees running in line with us.

We passed through the blonde girl and by the looks of it, she's in deep sleep. I sighed. Poor girl.

~Rira's POV~

Water... I need water... Aira struggled for breath as the thirst overpower her will. She already emptied her supply of water and she's not used to being dehydrated.

Her need for water is ever stronger than a normal human's need for it. It's like her own food and fuel.

Ask that fat guy over there. I saw him offering drinks to everyone earlier. The other voice on her mind suggested.

I don't think that's a good idea. I disagreed though it's useless because Aira already paced faster to get closer to the suggested guy.

She tugged the man's shirt and forget about her embarrassment to ask. "Uh... Mister, do you happen to still have any drink with you?"

"Huh? Uhh... Oh yes I still do have something to drink." The obese guy smiled and reached inside his satchel.

"I already gave the sodas away but I hope this one will do for you." He said smiling while handling her a can of milk tea.

I don't like the way he smiled and how over-friendly he is. I'm sure he's up to something.

No. Don't drink that Aira. You can't trust him. I voiced out to her as a warning.

"Great! I love tea. Thanks!" Aira quickly grabbed the can, opened it and drank every single drop of it.

Too late, she's too thirsty to obey. It only took seconds and she felt her head swirling as her knees starts to wobble, then darkness. She fainted into sleep.

Haha! Stupid water-head. The uncompassionate voice remarked.

It's your fault. You are the one who gave her that inept suggestion. I voiced out in a rebuke.

I could see the advantage of not having any emotions at times like this. I've seen many annoyed faces and I could tell how unpleasant it could be. I would've been annoyed at this rash voice of another consciousness on Aira's mind with me but all I have is indifference.

She's Akahi by the way. That other voice in Aira's mind, I mean, is Yugasa Akahi (Ln/Fn). I decided not to really focus on her because most of the time, she's like a consciousness like me. I can't really observe another consciousness, can I? But I'm not saying I can't guide and observe her.

Let me explain further to make the idea of who she is clearer. She's the other benchmark I've mentioned from the start. Benchmarks are the chosen twins and these twins must be in good harmony for them to fulfil their destined purpose. Though by the looks of it right now, I could say that they're not really in good terms.

Aki is always picking on her sister and I'd admit that it's been a challenge to make them turn into a team. Aki is the bitter one who had such drive to make insensible moves and insults. It's probably because she is not the one who became the main body between the two of them.

This is what that witch's curse done to them. She merged these twins into one body.

You can't really blame Aki for her short temper. She's too active to only settle being a mere consciousness. I've witnessed all her frustrations to make a move while Aira cannot. She just ended up losing her temper and send out insults every time Aira remained passive.

Among us three, she's obviously the witch's worst enemy. You can imagine just how much loathing she felt for that witch because of the curse she casted upon them, us.

Knowing Aki, she'd definitely make a nasty revenge.

Why me? Hehe. It's her fault, she fell for it even if you tried to prevent her from drinking. Aki reasoned towards me.

It's hard to believe that you gave her that suggestion for some reason. What if he handed her some kind of venom? You're lucky she only ended up sleeping, she could've been poisoned. I replied trying to give her a picture of better reasoning.

I knew she'll be fine. I felt it in my nerves. She smugly communicated through Aira's brain.

Still, you can't take such risk. Her harm is ours too...

Hai, hai... I get it. Be silent, I'll take over her now. Aki dismissed the topic then started to concentrate on taking over Safaira.

Aki's conscious presence filled Aira's comatose mind. She can take-over Aira as long as the later is unconscious. Once she did, some of Aira's features would mystically transform into Aki's.

Crimson hues slowly crept on Aira's blue hair from root to tips, her round and innocent-like blue eyes would become Aki's red sharp edged eyes. This process only took a minute to complete.

"Haaaah!" She exhaled loudly after taking in a deep breath as Aira's physique changed to hers.

"I'm free at last!" she stood on her feet and began stretching.

You should go now. You're too left behind.I reminded.

She bent down in a ready to run position. "Ready... Set... Go!..." she rapidly ran on the path before her.

I could sense all the excitement coursing through her, a huge difference compared to Aira's reserved state. What should I expect? She's Akahi, an almost exact contrast of her twin sister, Safairah.

~Kura's POV~

We've ran an 80km distance already. Satotz-san's pace is ever increasing and this could mean that were nearing the end of the tunnel. Our need to run up the stairs in order to keep up with him became the reason why more than 30 examiners are already deserted.

"Gaaaah! Faster! Faster! Faasteeer!" loud chants of an almost roaring high pitched voice came from behind.

I looked behind and felt my whole body froze because of what I saw. T-the blonde girl. The one who was the first one being deserted. She's fully awake than ever and is running remarkably fast... but that's not what makes my whole body quiver.

H-her eyes... They're fiery scarlet! I swear they were blue but how? Could she be... Could she be a Kurata?
