Lucy and Janet Abott were physically identical. They were born on December 13th. They had round hazel eyes that turned golden in the sunlight. They had soft, long, wavy auburn hair and they both had freckled faces and pale skin. No one could tell them apart if it weren't for Lucy's little beauty spot at the top of her left eyebrow's arch.
The daily routine was so that the father, Jamie Abott never came home until it was at least three o'clock in the night. He would mysteriously disappear, leaving Alice, his wife and the mother of the twins, clueless. He always had an excuse, and they were always different from each other. But this all took place vaguely in the twins' minds as they were only ten years old when their father had finally decided to never return home.
They remembered their mother opening an email on the computer that was written by their father. He explained briefly that he was unhappy so he found a new home with a new girlfriend and started a new life. He never mentioned his daughters, he never explained in detail where he was and whom he was with, and if he did then the police would have caught him by now. After all, they were never divorced; they shared the rent and many other financial responsibilities, but Jamie had simply disappeared into the darkness. The twins remembered Alice wailing in deep sadness as she lost everything. Alice used to dread the possibility that one day her family would be torn apart. She resented the idea of being unhappy in the life Jamie and her tried so hard to create together. To be lunged in her worst nightmare without closure or knowing what she had done wrong meant that everything she once considered a blessing had turned into her curse, everything that had brought her fulfilment gave her rage and emptiness, and the twins were always caught in the crossfire.
