The first time the twins found out about their power was in an unexpected situation. It was a cold winter but the sky refused to release a single drop of snow. A white Christmas was something the twins loved the most about winter. If winter wasn't white then where's the fun?
As usual, school decided to stand tall despite the harsh weather. School looked darker, lonelier, greyer and more frightening. The sky matched their mood, gloomy and cloudy. Lucy and Janet waited outside the school gates where they usually meet Jason and walk home together; but this time Jason was taking longer than usual. Nervousness had begun to stir in Lucy's stomach.
"You think he'll come?" Lucy asked worriedly.
Janet shrugged, her expression also worried, "he hasn't spoken to us since then... I don't know."
Right, since the time when they talked to each other about their grandmother and how evil she was, Jason freaked out and hadn't spoken to them since then.
"This is bad." Lucy muttered.
"Maybe our friendship is over..." Janet sighed.
"No!" Lucy snapped, "it can't be! He needs us as much as we need him!"
"Is that so?"
Lucy clenched her fists, her face turned redder and redder by the second and her frown tried to grow deeper as it could. "We need a friend."
Janet looked at Lucy with sympathetic eyes and Lucy calmed down a bit, "it's hurtful how you act like I'm not here for you."
Lucy's expression turned from angry to sad real quick. Janet looked away but Lucy's eyes were still staring at her with tears threatening to pour. Thankfully, Jason finally walked out of the school and he halted instantly when his eyes met the twins'.
Janet smiled thinly but Lucy had a beatific smile. Jason's eyes widened and his mouth was open, he didn't return the warm welcome.
"Jason! There you are." Janet said happily.
Jason shoots his eyes to the road and he started to run.
"Jason!" Lucy called in surprise.
"Leave me alone you freaks!" Jason responded as he ran.
Janet and Lucy exchange puzzled glances before running after Jason, trying to convince him to stop running and to explain himself. But Jason ran and he didn't stop, until Janet finally caught up with him and grabbed his coat's hood, and pulled him back.
"Jason listen!" Janet ordered angrily, "stop... struggling!"
Jason moved himself vigorously to get himself out of Janet's grip. "Let me go!"
Lucy's sobbing was heard and Jason stopped and glared at her.
"Why are you acting this way?" Lucy looked up at him and asked, her eyes glittering with naïve innocence, "I...I don't understand!"
"You're freaks! Everyone was right about you!"
"Why all of a sudden?" Janet asked.
"After the stories you've told me... you're family's just messed up!"
"It's just a story." Lucy said.
"I know it's not," Jason replied quickly, "I see you guys coming to school everyday with new scars and bruises. You guys brush it off by saying it was an accident or that you fell from places or things like that. I doubted but it's strange how you guys both have new bruises and scars... So... I... one day.... I... I-I followed you home!" Janet's eyes were open wide with pure horror in her expression, her grip grew weaker on Jason's but he continued nevertheless. "I saw what your mother did. I saw how she dragged you to the kitchen, beat you up and then forced you to apologize for whatever you did by cutting your wrists with a knife. I couldn't look away.... I stared at you until it ended. But you guys never call for help.... You enjoy this don't you? My mother said if someone enjoys pain then they are absolutely crazy."
