That boy... That boy, the anonymous boy, the boy no one knew about, so mysterious. Who was that boy? Why does Lucy never say what happened to him or where he is now? Why was he such an interesting topic? Samuel groaned and put his hand to his face. These questions did really drive him crazy it seemed.
"What is it now?" Amber asked smirking. Amber was his girlfriend from his previous school, but since he moved houses and schools, spending time with each other was crucial to keep the relationship afloat. Amber was a nice girl, her eyes were greenish-blue and her hair was long and a light blond. Samuel returned the smile. He wondered if meeting her in the public library was absolutely necessary. There were books and stationary scattered all around their table. They were isolated with two rows of bookshelves separating them from everyone else, their favourite spot. Interrupting the peaceful silence was Amber's loud rock music that was heard from the headphones around her neck.
"It's nothing." Samuel assured her, "it's just I can't really concentrate with that music on."
Amber glanced at her headphones and then at him in misbelief, "you never had a problem with my music. In fact you like this song!" She defended herself.
Samuel waited a little bit and then he relaxed in his chair with a sigh. She was right; this was his favourite song, Demons by Starset. "Sorry I wasn't really listening to it."
"Sam, what's up? You haven't been focusing lately."
Samuel bit his lip and paused for a moment, "it's the twins you see." He finally said.
"Ugh, not them again." Amber groaned.
"Just listen, they keep getting stranger and stranger to me. Like, who is this guy that they harmed, I don't even know what happened to him-"
"Really Sam? In my point of view, they seem freaky and need to be avoided, they're even begging for it!"
"I can't help it, especially when I want to become a social worker."
Amber narrowed her eyes, "what interests you so much about other people's lives?"
"Their lives don't interest me, their story does... does that make any sense?"
Amber laughed and shook her head.
"I guess not."
"But in all seriousness," Amber cleared her throat, "I think it's best for you to stay away from this case."
"Why do you say that?"
"Sam, why do you act so thick sometimes? They threatened you and your family-"
"I don't think they mean it, maybe they're just trying everything they can to just get rid of me."
"Can't you take a hint?"
"I want to help..."
"Do they look like they need your help?"
"Listen, they don't seem dangerous at all, they're socially awkward and they are bullied, that shows that they're vulnerable enough. They're like mice; they're scared of people. My theory is that something fishy is happening at home."
Amber groaned, sunk in her chair and rolled her eyes, "theory? Seriously? What's next detective? My suggestion is to just focus on your own life and then worry about others. If they need anyone's help desperately, they'd call for it."
"You needed my help, you never called for me. I had to force my way through." Samuel's voice sounded a little bit softer and more hurt.
Amber looked up at him with sadness in her eyes, "that was different." She muttered.
"So could this, Amber. They could be going through worse things than you've been going through before. Thank God it's ended now, but do you want anyone else to be where you've been?"
Amber looked down at her notes with a frown. Samuel put his hands gently on hers and she looked up into his eyes again.
"Support me in this, and I might save another person from ending their own life."
