"Say, Jan." Jason called, trying to get Janet's attention while she read a thick book as they all sat in their usual seat in the school library. Janet looked up at him and waited for him to continue. "Do you guys have any family history? Like do you have a dramatic ancestor story type thing?"

Janet narrowed her eyes in confusion, "why all of a sudden...?"

Jason shrugged, "My mom told yesterday that we could be a descendant from Vikings! Can you imagine that? How cool is that?"

"We don't know much about our family." Lucy answered. "If not, nothing at all really. Our family is quite distant; we have no one here. I know I have an auntie somewhere in Siberia but that's all I know."

"Actually," Janet started, a slight hint of a grin was formed on her face, she glanced at Lucy and then confidently looked back at Jason as she leaned forward and locked her fingers together and licked her lips; getting in the mood of telling a scary story as if they were gathered around a camp fire, all that was left was for her to hold a flashlight under her chin "I overheard my mom telling her story to someone I don't know, but it might be true. It's really disturbing, but I'm going to say it." Lucy tilted her head and frowned, but Janet continued regardless, "my mom was saying that her mom, my grandmother was a witch!"

"A witch?" Jason raised an eyebrow.

Janet nodded, "not a witch with potions and a pointy hat and nose who flies around with broom sticks, no. She said that our grandmother used to do black magic. Witchcraft."

"That's pathetic."

Janet ignored his comment. "At first, she got into all this because when Granny was young, she loved this man who refused to love her back and she as a result used black magic to indirectly harm the woman the man originally loved. But when that didn't make the man fall for her, she cursed him with a love spell  and ended up marrying the love of her life, and then she had my mom." Janet's smile faded and she frowned at herself, she continued on with the story but this time her paste was slow as if she discovered new things about the story that she never thought of before, " When mom found out about Granny, she tried to see if she could release the curse from her father, but Granny cursed her out of anger when she caught her intervening and she cursed that my mother's life would be hell after she died." Janet looked at Lucy and they both looked at each other with misbelief and their mouths half open.

Jason stared at them and then he cracked up and started to laugh hysterically, "that's hilarious!" He laughed. But Janet and Lucy didn't laugh with him.

"Jan, is it true?" Lucy asked.

Janet nodded, her jaw unable to move.

"Maybe this is why mom is suffering!"

"Mom suffered for it." Janet said quickly, barely audible.

"What?" Jason asked.

"Mom suffered for it. I remember mom saying over the phone that Granny slit her wrists and beat her when mom found out!"

"When did you hear this?" Lucy asked.

"Way before everything started, I just never thought of it again. I thought it was all a joke until it started happening to us."

"Wait." Jason intervened, "are you telling me your mother beats you and slits your wrists? Are you telling me your family is cursed?"

"Janet! Are we cursed?" Lucy exclaimed.

"You're insane!" Jason said, he quickly got up and clumsily packed his books and stationary away into his bags, "you guys are freaks!"

"Haha! It's joke Jason!" Lucy lied, "you just take everything too seriously!"

"Didn't feel like a joke to me." Jason put on his backpack and staggered out of the library.
