Samuel put his hands in his coat pockets as he walked out of the school to go home. Winter was almost on its way, he could tell by the cold wind drying his face and lips. He shivered to himself and licked his lips. He hated the cold. A group of boys caught his attention by surprise. Samuel could either keep going straight to get to his house quicker or make a right turn to some lonely street he rarely saw anyone go into. But this group of boys were slowly making their way to the right street, giggling and snickering like they were planning something. Samuel squinted his eyes to get a better view as to who they were.
Ah, the classic 'cool kids', the popular boys, including Mike. There were a few girls with them as well but they weren't a significant number compared to the boys. Samuel grew suspicious and followed them, trying not to be seen. He took a right turn and entered the street. The street was narrow, sunlight barely got through in between the tall rooftops which almost met the height of the cedar trees on the other side of the narrow road. He wondered if he was spotted, where would he run to and hide?"Where' you running to!" One boy called, snapping Samuel out of his thoughts. The boy who called out was talking to someone further away in front of them, he couldn't tell who it was. "Are you scared now that your sister ain't here?"
Samuel stopped in his tracks. Were they following Lucy? Of course they would, now that the twins were finally separated, Lucy was alone and helpless. Anger boiled in Samuel's veins. They couldn't just do that. Samuel ran towards them.
"Sam!" Mike greeted, everyone else stopped and turned to Samuel. Samuel's anger vanished and instead he grew confused. "Haha, did you come to see the twat over there as well?"
"You guys need to stop it." Samuel said, his anger returning to him after what Mike called Lucy.
"What?"
"You can't follow someone else home and stalk them. I don't support bullying at all, but isn't bullying them in school already not enough for you guys?"
"Listen here boy." This boy pushed forward, Samuel recognized him as the non-intimidating Adam. "Are you telling us what to do?" The corner of his lip slightly lifted.
"I can't tell you what to do." Samuel responded, "I'm just reasoning with you."
Adam stepped forward and pointed a finger at Samuel, "listen here you little cunt, I coul-"
"Sam?" People turned away and Lucy appeared standing. She looked scared though, her body was slightly shaking and her face looked worried. Samuel quickly pushed forward, grabbed Lucy's arm and pulled her away from the crowd further down the street.
"That son of a b-"
"No Adam!" Mike stopped Adam from running after Samuel, "leave them now."
"You know we could easily take both of them down." A girl suggested.
"No, Sam is my friend." Mike defended.
"Huh, you have a weird taste in friends."
"I never knew he was bold, don't blame me."
"It's fine now." Samuel sighed in relief and let go of Lucy's arm. "They're so annoying."
"We told you to leave us alone." Lucy said dreary.
"That's no way to thank me!" Samuel whined.
"Why don't you ever listen...?"
"Hey, even if I didn't know you I wouldn't still allow people to treat you like this. By the way, don't think I was following you okay? I followed that crew cause they were acting suspicious." He grew irritated, "you know what could have happened to you? You could have been assaulted, robbed, abused, they could have even followed you home and not even your own home would be a safe place for you anymore. So you know what? No need to thank me."
"My home was never a safe place." She murmured.
"Pardon?"
Lucy paused, "sometimes the less you care, the happier you would become, because you won't be afraid of what other people say or do to you or anyone else."
Samuel chuckled, "not in my case, if I just ignored you right now I would feel guilty forever."
Lucy looked down at her shoes walking on the floor. "If you keep up with this, you're going to end up like him."
Samuel frowned, "like who?"
Lucy sighed, "forget it."
"Wait, you're talking about that boy aren't you? I don't get his story, what did you do to him and where is he now?"
"I'm not comfortable with this subject."
"I know, I understand. Sorry, but I know you guys have been bullied for a long time and it's only natural if you want a bully to pay, maybe by hurting them or something. I'm just saying I wouldn't judge you, in fact I might have done the same." He laughed guiltily.
"He wasn't a bully."
Samuel felt like his heart skipped a beat and his face get hot. "T-then-"
"He was a nosey boy like you Sam. But I didn't know any better back then. Did we hurt him? I don't even know, but he got involved with us Sam, just like what you're doing right now, and he ended up paying the price. We're just staying away from you and other people out of fear of ourselves, not you. So please, count this as a warning." Samuel stopped and stared at Lucy as she walked pass, "I could walk the rest by myself, thank you." That was the last thing she said. Samuel couldn't help but to let his shock appear so obvious on his face, his mouth was open and he stared at the girl. These twins were only making him more and more confused and curious.
