~She whispers, "I'm afraid of falling." He smiles, "I'll catch you."~
The rest of Sunday went by smoothly and without any breakdowns. Mark and I went back to my house so I could get more of my things, and some documents, and then we stopped by my therapist's office to get his name on the list of legal guardians, and then we went to Walgreens to pick up my Prozac.
Now, it's bright and early on Monday morning.
My loud and annoying alarm blasted at 6 am. I jumped up immediately even though I didn't want to, shut off my alarm, and trudged into the shower.
Once I was out, I did all of the ~daily hiygenic~ things, did my usual light makeup, and got dressed in a black shirt a red and black plaid skirt, and a light grey washed denim jacket. I slipped on my white Air Forces 1s and went downstairs.
"Yeah, I'll let her know, I'm sure she'll be glad that there's some progress," Mark was in the kitchen talking to someone on the phone, I cautiously walked into the room and once Mark saw me, he gleamed.
"She's in here now, want to tell her the good news, Nurse Andrews?" My heart stopped as Mark waited for an answer before putting his phone on the speaker.
"Hey, Karli! How are you?"
"I'm okay, a little tired, but holding on, how about you?" My impatience for whatever this good news was growing by the mile every second.
"Even better. Your dad has made remarkable progress. When checking his pupil dilation, he followed the light when shone onto his eyes. This may have been a reflex, not a conscious decision, but it's still progress nonetheless!"
Now I understand why they were happy. My morning attitude seemed to slip away as I broke into a huge smile, a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
"Really? Oh my god, this better not be a joke."
"It's not Karli, I promise. Now hurry up and go take your history final so you can come to visit them. There's research that shows that some patients in comas can hear you and it helps them recover and wake up faster. I'm sure they miss your voice."
"Of course, we'll see you then!"
Mark hung up and I jumped into his arms, the smell of his cologne filling my nose. "Oh my god, I can't believe this!"
"I told you everything was gonna be okay, we just have to trust them." I nodded, words were jumbling up in my brain, flying around at an inexplicable speed. I pulled away and checked the time on my phone. "Holy shit we have thirty minutes. Granted which is a good amount of time, but fucking LA traffic, we gotta go!" Mark seemed to be ahead of me, with an iced coffee already in his hand along with a granola bar.
"I start the car, go get your bookbag, go go go!" Giggling at his rushed speech, I ran upstairs, accidentally scaring Chica, grabbed my bookbag, and rushed out but made sure I locked the door behind me.
After a short twenty-minute drive, Mark pulled into the student drop off at Lakeview High. I sighed, and unbuckled my seatbelt, grabbed my back, and got out. "Come get me as soon as I finish my test, please? I'll text you,"
"Of course, go take your whitewashed history test about how Martin Luther King jr. 'ended segregation' with just a speech. Even though, we all know it was way more complicated than that- when he ended up getting thrown into jail and killed for standing up for black rights."
"That's exactly what Maddie and I were talking about the other day! I'll see you in a few hours!" I smiled at him and shut his car door.
As I walked through the parking lot, the soft breeze of the morning spring air filled my senses. I smiled, having a feeling that today's gonna be a good day is a nice feeling to have. No one seemed to notice Mark was the one that dropped me off, other than Maddie and Emily, of course. They were waiting by the school doors, talking to each other, and giggling with excited looks on their faces. As I walked closer to them, their smiles got wider.
