"please mama?! it's only ONE day i'll sleep over! it isn't like i'll be sleeping over a stranger's house. i swear on god it'll be only maddy!" i plead as mom flips the tortilla, shaking her head.

convincing mexican mothers to go to a SINGLE sleepover is hell.

"elena, no is no. plus, you know how papa gets when you sleep over people's house." i groan as i roll my eyes, kicking the stove with my foot.

"fucking shit!" i yell.

"watch your boca, elena." mom sternly says as she turns the stove off, putting the tortillas in a tupperware.

"i'm home!" dad's accent traces along, making me sigh. yeah, there's no way i'm going to a sleepover.

"hola elena! how was your day today?" dad kisses me on the forehead as i nod and cringe.

being the only daughter living under a roof means they still treat you like a child, pathetic.

"boring, like always. look papa, i'm gonna go straight forward with you. can i sleep over maddy's house tomorrow? it'll only be one noche. only one night." i say as mom tuts making me stare at her.

"who else will be there?"

"her parents, of course." i say.

"what about bryce?" i tense at the name.

"why would i sleep over there knowing he'll be there? of course he isn't going to be there. i think maddy said he'll be at a party." i shrug my shoulders as papa crosses his arms, eyeing me.

"and only one night?"

"yes, only one night." i smirk, already sensing the answer.

"if i found out you sneak out to a party, you'll be grounded for vida, elena." i squeal as i run and hug him, hearing him chuckle.

"diego, you give elena too much freedom." mom scolds as i frown.

"mama, i promise nothing bad will happen. it'll only be us having a girl's night, inside obviously." i sigh.

"sure."

"hello, welcome to the dingo, what can i get for you?" i say as i look up, recognizing the familiar face.

"no way. darry?" i ask as he looks up, turning his face until he smiles widely.

"elena! how have you been? it's been ... jeez a while since i last saw you." i nod as i look down, laughing.

"i've been okay. still working, gotta help mama and papa help!"

"yeah, yeah. we miss you. you know, steve always has a frown each time he attempts to cook a cake." i laugh as steve enters my mind.

"of course. i've been too busy, sorry." i say as i look around, the diner filled as always.

"i get it. work kicks ass, a lot." fully agree.

"what can i get you, though? i don't wanna distract you from ... wherever you're going to." i say as darry chuckles and nods.

"just three milkshakes. all vanilla please." i nod as write it down, walking to the back and handing it to the cook.

"how much?" darry takes his wallet out, but i stop him.

"c'mon, darry. it's on the house." darry shakes his head, making me frown.

the last time i saw him, i knew he was struggling with money problems, ever since his parents' death.

"really?"

"yes!" i go back and grab the three milkshakes, carefully setting them on the counter.

"thank you! i hope i see you around more." i nod before darry walks away, smiling.

i look down, debating.

"darry!?" he turns around, tilting his head.

"how ... um is he?"

the look of sympathy makes me look like a fool.

"like always, elena. have a nice day." i lick my lips, sighing as i hold onto the counter top.

of course he's okay. what did i except from him?
