NATALIE KANE
"Natalie?" Jenna still sounded confused.
"Natalie Kane," I said, nervously. The phone went silent for a moment. "Hello?" I chewed the inside of my cheek.
"No fucking way," Jenna shouted. "Where the hell have you been for the last three years?"
I inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly. "Things have just been..." I paused to try and find the right words. "Not good," I finally said. "I promise I'll explain everything to you, but I just really need somewhere to stay right now. I'm at the hospital and I need to be picked up."
I barely got the chance to get my last few words out before she immediately replied, "Say no more." I could hear rustling through the phone. "I'm putting on pants and I'll be on my way. Be there in fifteen." I heard a click and the line went dead.
"My friend is coming to get me," I told Cody as I handed his phone back to him. "She should be here soon."
"I'm glad you have somewhere to go," he said, sincerely. "I'll wait outside with you until she shows up. I want to make sure you leave safely." I nodded.
I still didn't feel like talking, so we stood silently outside the emergency room doors. Luckily, it wasn't that long of a wait.
Jenna pulled up to the curb in a black Saturn Ion, put on her four ways, and got out of the car. She hadn't changed a bit. She had the same fiery red hair and freckles, and was beautiful as always. She ran up to me and without hesitation, she threw her arms around my neck and hugged me tightly. Pain shot through my body from the pressure on my sore wounds, but I didn't care. I needed this hug so badly; I needed my best friend. I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't fight back the urge to cry any longer. Tears started pouring out of my eyes and I sobbed loudly into her shoulder.
"It's okay," she whispered in my ear as she rubbed my back soothingly. She then pulled away and grabbed my hands. "Let's go home," she said. "Lucky for you, my roommate just moved out last week and her empty bed is calling your name." She winked and a small smile stretched across her lips.
A laugh escaped my chest in between sobs. Three years later and she was still the same old Jenna. She always knew how to make me laugh, even when things were shitty.
I thanked Cody for all that he had done for me and left with Jenna. She didn't ask me any questions or try to pressure me to talk for the entire car ride, and I was grateful for that.
When we arrived at Jenna's apartment, she showed me to my room. It was pretty much empty except for a dresser, nightstand and a bed. The comforter was pink, soft and fluffy, and I wasted no time climbing in. I pulled the covers up under my chin, closed my eyes, and almost instantly fell into a deep sleep.
When I awoke, the sun was beaming through the windows. I squinted my eyes and groaned, rolling over to look at the clock on the nightstand. It was already five thirty, I had slept almost the entire day away. If it wasn't for my belly aching from hunger, I probably would have stayed in bed longer. I stretched my arms and legs, reluctantly got up and headed towards the door. I needed food, and I needed it now.
As I emerged from my bedroom and entered the kitchen, Jenna was sitting at the island with a box of pizza in front of her. A huge smile stretched across my face as she grabbed a slice and held it out for me to take. "It's your favorite," she said, smiling back at me. "Bacon, black olives and extra cheese."

Kurt Adam** "Hey," I squeaked back. I didn't know why he was so intimidating, but for some odd reason, I kind of liked it. It wasn't a scary intimidating, I wasn't afraid of him at all. He was intriguing, sexy, and a man who screamed danger, but at the same...
