"What the fuck is she doing with that asshole, again?" I said, as I stormed back into my apartment after having witnessed Jace wrap his arms around Esta, his grip tightening on her the longer we all stood there.

"What are you talking about?" Melissa asked behind me as she shut the door.

"That guy is a fucking dick!" I said, pointing toward the door.  "He treats her like shit!"

"Maybe he's changed?"

"No, no, he hasn't changed.  I can see it.  Didn't you see the way he made sure to pull her closer to him and how his grip on her tightened the longer we all stood there and talked?"

"No, Niall, I didn't.  I saw a boyfriend bring his girlfriend in for a hug while talking with his neighbor.  He seemed perfectly nice to me."

"It's an act, Melissa.  Don't believe it.  He's an asshole."

"Well, maybe he's changed, Niall.  Despite what you may say or think."

"Doubt it."  I ran my hands through my hair, angered at his reappearance in Esta's life.

"Well, if he's such an asshole, why did he seem excited about coming to your show next week?"

"I don't know.  To please her, maybe?  To give off the appearance that he's changed?"

"Niall, I think you're reading too much into this," Melissa said, coming up to me and placing her hands on my arms to get me to look at her.

I nodded.  I wasn't wrong about Jace.  I knew I wasn't.  He hadn't changed, I don't care what he says, he's still an asshole.

There was a knock at the door.  I went to answer it.  "Esta, hey," I said, surprised to see her again tonight but also fearful she may have heard what I had said.  I don't know how loud I had gotten.

"Hey, um, sorry to bother you guys.  I'm sure you're tired and want some rest but Jace had kind of a fun idea and I thought I'd quickly run it by you.  He thought it would be nice for us all to go out tomorrow night.  He would like to get to know you a little better and we'd both like to get to know Melissa."

Esta looked past me and lightly waved towards Melissa.

"That would be great, Esta," Melissa said, before I could answer.  "Thank you, we'd love to."

Melissa wrapped her hands under my arm, clasping them together.  I saw the same strange look briefly appear on Esta's face again.  But, just as quickly, it disappeared.

"Great.  We can figure out a time tomorrow.  You guys have a good night."

Esta quickly turned on her heel and went back inside her apartment.  Almost too fast, if you asked me.  I shut the door again.

"See, Jace wants to go out with us tomorrow.  Maybe he really has changed."

I rolled my eyes.  "I don't buy it for a second."
