Dear People

Dear People,
Stop telling me to be quiet.
My voice is something I have claimed from protests and riots,
Done by the women before me.
To give me a sound, an expression, to give me a sense of gravity.

Dear People,
Stop telling me to be silent.
It had to endure centuries against your violence.
Trying to speak up, to demand my rights,
Which you seem to be against out of pure spite.

Dear People,
Stop telling me to lower my voice.
My speech is not a yes or no choice,
That you can tick when you feel comfortable.
My expression is not for whenever you find it preferable.

Dear People,
Stop telling me to soften my tone.
It is the one thing that is fully my own.
And I intend to use it like the women before me,
To make a better world where women can live carefree.

Dear People,
Stop telling me to change my opinions.
I am not an object in your dominion.

-----------------
For a big part of my life, people have told me not to talk so much. They've told me I talks lot. Its unbecoming. Maybe my voice shouldn't be so loud.
Maybe I should adopt a softer tone.

Now, as a teenager, I have been an activist for equal rights, trying to change people's perceptions on feminism and LGBTQ rights in a nation which is patriarchal in nature. Here they have told me to stop talking so much about the "activist nonsense". They've told me girls who are feminists aren't good girls. That I should, maybe, keep my opinions to myself.

I say no.
This is a voice I have got after generations of women fighting for our right to use it. I am not going to let it go to waste.
I am going to use this voice like the women before me.
Fighting.

I hope you do so too.
