THEY LOOK BACK IN ANGER
The Gallaghers are to be featured in highly anticipated Netflix docuseries about the Britpop years
Both of the Gallaghers are going to speak in the upcoming Netflix series, as will their estranged sister.
Netflix has announced that the upcoming documentation series about the defining music movement of the 90s will feature interviews with the elite of the era. The streaming service yesterday released a press statement with a list of names who'll appear in the ten part series, also reasoning why the initially eight part series will be stretched.
"As we talked to several people it just became clear that the utter fascination of the era needs to be explored in a wider range than we originally thought" producer Matt Whitecross explains to NME. "The professional and the personal in those years came together in a spectacular way and affected everyone who was a part of Britpop. We want to be fair and diverse in our portrayal of it."
The public attention on the upcoming project has overwhelmed them, he explains further. Massive fan speculation is cursating on Twitter and Instagram since the producing of the series was announced five months ago. "We didn't think the interest in the music of the 90s is still so huge. Perhaps it's nostalgia, but there seems to be a need for the artistic values Britpop had."
It will feature the likes of the Blur members Alex James and Dave Rowntree, former Elastica frontwoman Justine Frischmann, Brett Anderson, Noel Gallagher and, as was yesterday announced, plans on talking to musician like Jarvis Cocker, Graham Coxon, Paul Weller and Fran Healy.
The most surprising name on the list no doubt being Liam Gallagher. The announcement of his participation followed a Twitter storm in the last days. Liam posted several angry tweets after it became public that his sister Claire Gallagher, partner of Damon Albarn, will also speak in the series.
Regarding the question why the famously fallen out sister of the Gallagher brothers is interviewed Whitecross says:
"She's a vital witness not only of the Oasis story but almost everything in music around that time. The drama built up around her person explains a lot about the madness of the time, but our intention isn't the further scandalization of it all but to let her speak on her own terms."
Regarding the question whether she will bring new light to the war of Britpop, he says:
"We don't want a defense for either party, we asked her to speak up because of the unique position she was in. Being the sister of the almost Cain and Able of the time and finding love with their biggest rival is no doubt a fascinating story. And I have to say I sometimes find it difficult to interview her and not be curious. But the woman has been scrutinized for almost twenty years for her past and it's not our job to continue that. We are interested in the perspective she has on the whole matter, a perspective that has never been asked before."
