When you had first seen the posting to help K-pop trainees improve their English, it sounded too good to be true. However, after being pressed by your best friend, Morgan, to apply, you revised your resume to the best of your ability. The ad was vague and didn't explain what entertainment company it was for, but you couldn't help but secretly hope it was for a big K-pop company like YG, JYP, or BigHit.
"I can't believe I'm doing this," you said to Morgan, who was peering over your shoulder. The two of you were hunched over your laptop about to complete your application for the job posting.
"I'm so excited for you! If you get this job, you'll get to be in Korea and meet future K-pop idols," Morgan squeezed your shoulder. "Oh, just press the send button!" You hesitated, and Morgan leaned over and pressed the enter button with such speed, you almost didn't see her hand fly to your computer. You squealed and turned to your best friend of 13 years.
"Dude!" Morgan laughed as you stared at her with fire in your eyes. She pinched your cheek lightly with a smile.
"I knew you weren't going to do it by yourself," She teased, and you closed your laptop with a groan. For a few minutes, you just sat at the table in shock, as you thought of what might happen. While the chances of you getting the job were low, you secretly hoped that the mysterious and vague job ad was hidden well enough that you might get the job. But you didn't want to get your hopes up too much. There were probably thousands of other K-pop fans in English-speaking countries that wanted the same chance as you. You put your head on the table, overwhelmed by your thoughts.
"Hey, wanna go get boba?" Morgan tapped on your arm, knowing that getting boba would make you happy. You looked up at her and smiled. Morgan offered her hand to you, and the two of you got up and left your tiny apartment to get boba drinks nearby.
*****************************************One Week Later************************************
You sat at your computer in disbelief as you read the email over again. With the heading "Job Interview/Teach K-pop Trainees", you had never clicked on an email so quickly
"Dear Y/N," it read. "We have received your job application for the English Coach position for our entertainment company in Seoul, Korea. After reviewing your resume and cover letter, we would like to schedule a video interview with you within the next week. Please respond to this email with at least 3 dates and times that you would be able to video conference with one of our recruiters, and we will get back to you shortly. We look forward to speaking with you about your experiences and qualifications, and please let us know if you would like to end the application process.
Thank you,
XXX Entertainment (Company Redacted due to confidentiality orders)"
You quickly texted Morgan about the email, and she quickly called your cellphone to express her excitement.
"OH MY GOD!" She yelled into your ear, and you moved your phone further away from your ear to prevent any hearing loss. "YOU GOT AN INTERVIEW!" You could practically tell that Morgan was jumping up and down with excitement from her end of the conversation.
"They want me to interview within the week. What do I do?" Your voice is a little shakey, as your nerves were getting the best of you. Talking to strangers was not something you were very good at, and video calls made you a little nervous. Thinking about how the company was in Korea, the person you would be interviewing with probably would speak English well, but they could also have a hard time understanding English. The company was seeking an English-language coach, after all. "Like what if there is miscommunication?"
"Oh, girl. PLEASE. First of all, I'm sure that whoever will be talking to you will speak at least some English. And second, they can always use a translator if they don't understand." Morgan breathed through the phone.
"Do you think I should try to learn some Korean, though?" You bit your index finger, a bad habit you had never gotten ridden of in your 24 years on the earth.
"I mean, it never hurts,"Morgan replied. "What are you doing right now?"
"Uh....I was just checking emails."
"We gotta celebrate you getting a video interview with this mysterious K-pop company! Meet me at Chipotle in 20. Bye! Love you! I'm so proud!" Morgan hung up. You sighed and put your head in your hands. You got a video interview, and if you got this job, you would have to move to Korea. You hadn't really told anyone else other than Morgan, and you were a little worried about how your parents might respond. You reminded yourself that you were an independent 24-year-old young person who was currently living in a tiny box apartment in NYC. You didn't need to get your parents' approval. You have money saved up. You can do this.
**A/N**
HELLO THERE! So I had a dream about teaching English to a K-pop trainee company a few nights ago, and after reading fanfics on Wattpad for the last several weeks, I was inspired to write my own fic. I'm 25 years young who has always loved writing, and I used to write One Direction fanfiction when I was younger. So I thought I'd pick up writing again, and we'll see where this goes!
