It's funny how I got this idea..

I was at our local fair here in town watching the Derby.

And then I thought to myself "I wonder if there are any Klance books. Where the boys are in a derby."

So I decided to make one instead!

"Really Keith?" Allura asked. "Another Derby?"

"Derby's are my life Allura." Keith replied as he worked on his car that was sitting in his garage. "And you know it."

It's true. When Keith was little, about 5, his parents took him to the fair every year where they held the derby. One year, his dad decided to put a car in. He continued to do it ever year for Keith.

But when his dad came down with an illness and passed away, just before Kora was born and Keith knew he had to continue to do the Derby. So at the age of 17, Keith ran in his first derby. And won.

So he continued to do it. 3 years later he is still doing them. And his little sister was now into them as well.

Shiro let out a sigh. "No stopping you now. So what's the reward this time?"

"15 grand." Keith answered from under the car. "And before you ask, Yes both my mom and Kora know."

"The poor girl is going to turn out like you." Allura said running a hand through her hair.

"She loves the Derby." Keith said with a smile. "She loves how the cars just crash together. But the best part of all, she's the one who picks the designs for my cars."

"What's the theme this year?" Pidge asked leaning against the car.

"Not sure yet." Keith said. "Kora can't choose. She's stuck between, Flames and Sharks."

"Keef!" The 5 year old laugh and ran into the garage. "I got it!"

"What is it?" Keith questioned standing up.

"Sharks that are on fire!" Kora giggled. "Or Sharks swimming in lava."

"I like the Sharks on Fire theme better." Matt spoke up.

"Perfect." Keith smiled. "The car is just about finished. Than we got about 4 days to get the drawing and painting done."

"Can we do three color flames?" Kora questioned bouncing on her heels.

"What colors?" Adam asked.

"Red, Blue and Purple!" Kora said.

"I think that'll look very cool." Allura smiled.

"Let's do it." Keith said. "Shiro you think you can help me for a bit. Cars almost done."

Shiro nodded. "Let's do it."

~~5 hours later~~

"There we go." Keith smiled looking at the car.

"When's the Derby?" Pidge asked.

"Saturday, at 1." Keith answered. "Down at the fair they got going on."

Pidge nodded. "We'll be there."

"All of will be." Shiro added. "Cheering you on."

"Thanks you guys." Keith smiled. "All that's left is to start the designing process. We have about 3 days to do it."

"We can do it." Kora smiled.

"In the meantime." Matt started. "I'll talk my parents into letting you use the trailer. Just so that you can tow you're car down there."

"Thank you." Keith said.

"Dinner!" Krolia called out.

"Well we best be heading out." Shiro said.

"I'll see you guys tomorrow?" Keith said. "We can take the car for a test run and get it painted and stuff."

Adam nodded. "Knowing you, you'll be up at 6 am."

Keith smiled sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck. "Probably."

"We'll be here around 10 tomorrow morning."

"Alright. See you guys later!" Keith said as he watched his friends wave as they left.

Keith walked inside to the Kitchen and dished out his food before sitting at the table with his family.

"How's the car coming along?" Krolia asked once her son took a seat at the table.

"Just got to get it painted. We are doing a test run with it tomorrow just to make sure it's good." Keith explained.

"Can I come with you?" Kora questioned.

"Sure you can." Keith answered. "You're the one who chooses the designs."

"I have to work tomorrow in order to get Saturday day off." Krolia said. "I work from 7 am to 4 pm."

"Alright." Keith said. "After this derby I'm going to look and see when the next one is."

"Yay!" Kora cheered.

"She's going to be like you." Krolia laughed and ruffled her daughters hair. "She'll be the next one to run in the Derby."

Older brother protective mode activated. "Maybe. I know I'm a hypocrite by saying this, but they're dangerous. I'm not sure if she should run in them." Keith said as he finished his dinner.

"That's up to her." Krolia said picking hers and Kora's plate up.

"Yeah." Kora said. "But I like watching them. Driving a car in them looks spooky."

Keith smiled. "That's my girl."

"I'm just glad you're always okay after them." Krolia mumbled as she walked into the kitchen with her son following.

"I always am and always will be." Keith replied as he put his dish in the sink.

"I know. It just worries me sometimes. The way the cars get hit out there. There's always that thought you could get hurt." Krolia said. "Or worse."

"Mom." Keith said seriously. "It's fine. I'm always dressed properly too. And not just that but the fire extinguisher is beside me."

Krolia sighed. "I know."

"And we need the money." Keith said quietly.

Krolia was the only one working at the moment. But if Keith could win the Derby's, that money could help them out.

"I know. But there's safer ways to get the money." Krolia said.

"Dad did this. So I need to do it too." Keith said before leaving the room.

"Come on Kora." Keith told her. "It's time to get ready for bed."

"Okay!" Kora smiled and ran off to her bedroom with Keith following.

"I'll wake you up in the morning." Keith said kissing the girls forehead.

"Okay Keefy." Kora said. "Night night."

"Night Kora." Keith smiled and left the room.

He walked into his room and brushed his teeth before getting into bed and letting sleep take over him.
