21: Girl Talk

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Penelope ignored her tía for the rest of the week when Oscar told the truth about him and Nina dating. Nina kept trying to make things better with her niece but Penelope would only huff and turn the other cheek. Nina didn't know whether to blame Victoria or Oscar about her niece ignoring her.

With school just two weeks away, Nina spent more time working in the store. Her and Angelica would take shifts at the counter while the other would stick to stocking up the shelves.

Oscar told her that he wouldn't be able to drop by as he would be spending the day with Cesar. He wanted to show Lil' Spooky a bit more of becoming a Santo. It still bothered Nina but she was slowly paying less attention to that.

"Just tell me why we aren't friends with Cesar. Stop acting like dicks and just tell me."

"Oh uh Nina! Monse is back!"

Nina looks up from stocking the canned goods to see Ruby, Jamal, and Monse walking over. "Monse! Hi!" She grinned before walking over to her to give her a hug.

"Hey, Nina. Its good to see someone who hasn't turned on me yet," Monse said sarcastically while returning the hug.

"When did you get back from writing camp?" Nina asked as she pulled away.

"Yesterday afternoon," Monse shrugged. "Say, you don't know why these two assholes stop being friends with Cesar do you?" she asked with a smile on her face.

Nina looked past her to see the two boy shaking their heads making her keep things a secret. "U-uh hEY! You got your braces off!" Nina forced while the boys could only face palm.

Monse turns her head between her friends and Nina. "You know?" She asked rather aggressively.

"Look, Monse it really isn't my place to tell," Nina sighed making Monse cross her hands over her chest. "Honestly you guys just tell her," she added looking over to Jamal and Ruby.

"Okay. Okay fine," Ruby nodded as Jamal was about to lose it. "Nina's dating Oscar!"

Monse gasps and her eyes go wide before looking over to Nina. "That puto?? You're dating the leader of the Santos? Unbelievable, Nina I thought you were smart."

"Hey," Nina called out getting a little offended. "There's more to Oscar than just him being Spooky," she defended.

"Actually, in all fairness they are kind of cute together. Like I've never seen Spooky all lovey dovey," Jamal rambled.

"But he's a Santo!" Monse argued.

"Which makes Cesar-"

"Okay!" Ruby cuts Nina off before she could reveal anything else to Monse. "Monse, lets go get your favorite juice from the freezer," Ruby said before pushing Monse away from Nina.

"Bye Nina!" Ruby said before disappearing into the other aisle. Jamal follows Ruby waving good bye to Nina as well.

Nina shook her head before going back to stocking up the canned goods. In the middle of her stocking up she could still hear the bantering between Monse and her two guy friends.Their voices began to drown out as she heard the bell from the door go off meaning they had left already.

The day goes by like the usual, now Nina was back to handling the counter. Though it was that time of the day where not that many people came into the store. With summer almost over, Berto had reminded her to go over the books and help them with their taxes yet again. She was paid extra to do that but with or without pay it would've been fine with her.

Nina would text Oscar every now and then but she ended up talking more to Cesar that day ever since his friends came by the store earlier on. She knew how much Cesar missed them but a part of her felt like they shouldn't cast him out like this.
