Chapter 16

"So" I start off the conversation.

Hayes and I are at a diner drinking milkshakes.

"What's up?" Hayes says, brushing his brown hair off his face.

"Well, how's you and Ashley?" I say, slurping my milkshake.

"Great" he says, flat.

"Something wrong?" I say, examining his unsettled face.

"Nah, nothing" he says, sipping his milkshake.

I stare at him until he surrenders and tells me what's wrong.

"She doesn't want to go to the dance with me" he says, looking down at the table.

"Well, who do you think on taking" I say, smirking.

He looks right into my blue eyes and says, "you"

Night of the Dance (A month later)

Alice and I are both getting ready for the dance.

I'm wearing a purple strapless dress, and Alice is wearing a black mermaid- like dress.

Candice is also going, with Nash (because of me.)

I apply my makeup, and start to head downstairs when I look down from the railing to see Hayes, in a tux and a purple tie, matching my dress color.

His hair is swept like it always is, and my parents start talking to Hayes about football.

"Make yourself comfortable, Jamie should be coming down shortly" my mom says, walking into the kitchen.

Alice already left, with her boyfriend, Josh.

I wait until the right moment, and then I start walking down my curving staircase.

Hayes locks eyes with mine, and something weird happens that I never really felt with Hayes.

I blush

I walk over to him, and give him a hug.

"You look..... Beautiful" Hayes says.

"You look handsome as well" I say, flashing a grin at him.

Then Nash practically bursts down the door.

Hayes and I break down laughing.

Nash pulls out flowers, looks around, and then takes a deep breath.

"She's coming, easy tiger" I say, laughing.

He nods and sits next to me on the couch.

When we get to the dance Nash and Candice go a separate way than us.

"I'll go get some drinks" Hayes says, walking over to the drink table.

"I'll be in the bathroom" I shout to him.

I walk in the bathroom, adjusting my hair, and then I pull out a card that I made for Hayes.

I found it in a pile of old arts and crafts.

In the card, there was a picture of Hayes and I at the lake, on a jet ski.

I took the card, and put a more recent picture of Hayes and I at the beach, lying in the sand, with mermaid tales.

I put : "real friendships never die" on the top.

I fold it neatly, and walk out to find Hayes.

When I do find him, my heart sinks to the floor.

He's with

Ashley

Maybe they're just talking, Jamie.

I walk over with a perplexed look on my face.

"Hey, Ashley" I say, crossing my arms.

"Go home, Hayes and I are partners for the dance" she sneers at me.

At first, I look at Hayes, then I know they're not just talking.

I shake my head and drop the card I made.

"What happened to you, Hayes?" I say, and he tries to say something but I start running away to find Candice

"Wait" I hear Hayes say.

I can sense him following me, so I speed up my pace.

Of course, Hayes doesn't have 3" heals on, so he catches me.

He grabs my hand and I turn to face him.

"What now?" I say, pulling away from him.

"She's not my date, you are! She came over when you were in the bathroom, and pleaded for me to be her date. I said no, but then you came and she said that and I'm so sorry please forgive me" Hayes says, choking on his words.

"Well," I say, my lips curving into a smile.

"May I have this dance?" I ask, and I hold my hand out for Hayes to take it.

"Surely" he says, bringing me to the dance floor.

Everyone got with their date, and started to dance slowly to "All of Me"

Hayes actually isn't a bad dancer, I was impressed.

Candice and Nash were also dancing, and Candice was resting her head on Nash's shoulder.

So, I do the same.

I breathe in Hayes's cologne, and I smile.

I feel safe when I'm with him.

When the songs are over, Hayes and I bail out and head back to his place.

I change into sweats and my gymnastics sweatshirt.

"Movie?" Hayes says, and I nod.

We decide on Monsters Inc.
