i wake up,panting,gasping for breath,my throat dry and scratchy, my heart trying to get back to it's normal pace.
where am i? the memories come flooding back to me. i'm at the...hospital? oh , wait, yes i am.
"here" a nurse says, handing me a glass of water. i didn't realise she was there but i gratefully take the glass and notice my hands shaking.
"Baby?" i look up to see my mom staring at my exposed arms in shock. that's when i realise i'm in my tank top from last nights bonfire. my scars and cuts are exposed for all to see. i pull my blanket closer to hide but it's no use. my mother, twin and best friend have seen all my scars.
Mom looks like she's going to cry. Isla looks speechless and Lora.... Lora Davis,my badass best friend, is crying.
"what the hell?" Isla finally says.
"Isla.." my mom tries to stop the spitfire from rising.
"so you want to be a psychologist when you yourself have psychological issues? you want to know what the doctor told us? you have depression , PTSD and a serious case of self-blame. and then this?" she snaps.
"i can't fucking believe you!" she throws her hands up in disbelief, stares at me with glossy eyes and walks away. my mom calls for her and goes after her after a sad glance at me.
"hey." Lora walks to my side and gently touches my shoulders "she didn't mean it"
but i know the truth. her words hit me like a slap to my face.
they're true.
i know because i could see it in her eyes.
she meant every word she said.
