I slowly turn. Not to face Alexander and yell at him for calling me that in front of everyone and just in general, but to face Liza. Staring into her once welcoming eyes, I could almost see the confusion and annoyance in her eyes. Not the type of annoyance that you have when someone just annoys you, but the type of annoyance that you have when someone hits on your boyfriend.
I just stare at her as she stares back and forth at me and Alexander. I open my mouth to say something in my defense, but now, as usual, Mr.Douchey jumps to my defense, or so I thought.
"Liza, how nice it is to see you. What a lovely morning is it not?" He looks around.
"Lovely." She responds curtly, then turns to me. "Ms.Gregory, I expect you in my office immediately so you can explain the fact that you are late on your second day of working here."
"Liza, I totally agree with you, but I think I can handle her tardiness. In fact, I'm in need of a personal assistant, and I think that Miss Gregory here would be a perfect fit."
"But Alexander, she is a financial controller. She isn't meant to be a personal assistant. Maybe I can find you another one?" Liza folds her arms in front of her chest, her stare boring into Alexander. I was surprised he could even hold this firm in front of her icy glare.
Alexander seemed to ponder this and after many pleading glances from both Liza and me, he finally ceded.
"Fine, I expect an assistant hired by the end of this month. And in the meantime, I must have a chat with Ms.Gregory about why she's late in my office. Please follow me."
I cautiously walked after the now very serious and formal Alexander, who at this point was scaring me a little bit. That amount of shit that he has just gotten me into is immeasurable. I am going to be swimming in a shit ton of work because of him and because Liza won't let this slide.
Entering his office, he shows me to one of his large couches as he sits at his desk and says,
"So Ms.Gregory, why were you late today."
"Well Mr.Volk, my car broke down and I had to catch a ride from someone to get here. I'm sorry I was late on my second day. I should've just called my boyfriend to pick me up."
I get a very strange look from Alexander as he just snorts and responds with,
"Yes, so your boyfriend could have forgotten to turn on his blinker and still made you late. You should be very thankful to the person who got you here, Ms.Gregory."
"I am Mr.Volk. Now, may I return to my office? I have a lot of work to catch up on."
He gives a solemn nod and then a small smirk.
As I walk out of his office, I would've breathed a sigh of relief if it wasn't for my very stiff boss leaning against the wall outside.
"Ms.Gregory, if I must remind you once again that you cannot be tardy to work without a valid excuse, you will be severely punished. Is that understood? Now please, go to your office to continue your work."
I stiffly nod and almost run down the hall to my office.
Entering my office, I finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing that I'm at least somewhat safe from everyone else. Now lunch is going to be a whole other story. After a solid 4 and a half hours of working, I lean back in my chair and stare up at the clock. Lunch was only half an hour away and my stomach was already growling with anticipation.
My thoughts were interrupted by a very friendly and welcoming face, Sam's.
"Hey, Nat, or should I say 'princess'?"
I groaned and laid my head on the desk, "You heard that?"
"Oh honey, I heard and saw it. That was... one of the funniest things I have ever seen!" He bursts out laughing while leaning against the door frame. Quickly looking down the hall, his eyes widen and he whispers,
"It's the witch of the west, I need to go. See you at lunch!"
I stifle a laugh while watching him scurry away like a dog with its tail between its legs. Looking back at my computer, I groan and try to focus again but it seems like my brain just doesn't want to function correctly.
I stand up to close my door and just seem to stand there for a second, thinking. Wait, I haven't talked to Talia in ages! I walk to my desk and take out my phone. On my lock screen, it reads,
"Hey hon, are you sure you have the right number? I didn't have any panic attacks yesterday." I furrow my brows in confusion. How is it that Mark's mom didn't have any panic attacks when he had just told me yesterday that he went to help her out?
"Oh, I'm so sorry Angela. I must've texted you by accident."
I didn't want to let her know that Mark lied to me for some strange reason. Why does this day just keep getting worse? Please let lunch be better. Although, after the scene this morning, I honestly don't know.
I wonder... Can I get fired if my boss doesn't like me?
