That one line shook me to my core. Wait, she's the woman who was screaming at Alexander! She's the same woman who looked like she had just had a mini-stroke when he pulled her out of the room. I wonder what relation she has with that douche.
But I still look into her glinting blue eyes and try to force a smile onto my face. Maybe she isn't as bad as everyone says she is. I look forward once again and notice she's already inside the office, beckoning me to enter. My eyes quickly glanced left and right down the hallway. Who knows, this may be the last time someone sees me alive.
I enter the office and take the seat Liza offers me. I find myself trying my best not to find that same woman who yelled at our Ceo in the cafeteria, and yet her eyes give me no clues. I see her fix her black and grey patterned vest over a white blouse and look right back up at me once again.
"Miss Gregory, do you know why I called you here today?" She asks in a monotone. Her mouth didn't even twitch as her eyelashes batted a perfect rhythm. At that moment, I didn't know whether I wanted to run away yelling, 'because you have a crush on your superior and I saw it', or just sit there awaiting my death.
Instead, I just answered with, "No ma'am, I don't."
She then offered me a smile and responded, "I invited you here to congratulate you on the job. Many have applied, but only you received the job. It is my hope that you like your office and environment. I can see you fitting in quite well here."
I just sat there dumbfounded, but once again, I'm new here so I couldn't really expect to understand the people who worked here.
"I'm terribly sorry if I came out a bit harsh in the beginning. My day has been a bit rough if I do say." She finally reverted her attention away from my face and down to her personal desk.
I felt quite bold, so instead of backing away and just replying with, 'it's totally ok,' I responded with something different.
"Oh, may I ask why? Is there any way I can help?"
She looks back up at me, seeming quite shocked by my response. "Thank you for the offer but I have it handled. I had to give one of my best workers the day off because of some dinner she had to attend. Her excuse was, 'my boyfriend and brother must meet today.' I just had to find a temporary replacement for the day."
I nodded my head as if I understood. I semi-understood what she meant, but what I definitely understood was that I hadn't crossed any boundaries with her. It seemed like she wanted to have a friend to talk with. If she wasn't as bad as everyone made her out to be, then why all the rumors?
"Ahem, may I come in Liza?" I turn my head as a very familiar voice invades my thinking.
Liza's face immediately becomes quite tight and guarded as she magistrates a perfect tight-lipped smile to whoever is standing behind me, although her eyes tell a different story.
"Of course Mr.Volk. Please, take a seat." as she points to the empty seat next to me. I almost slouch down in my chair, until I remember he's actually still my superior.
"Miss Gregory, please meet Mr.Volk, our CEO and co-owner." I get up and turn to face this supposed 'Mr.Volk'. As soon as our eyes meet, his eyes gleam with a bit of excitement. I almost want to groan at how cruel fate is bringing us together, especially to work at the same job.
"Alex- Mr.Volk, this is our newest employee and our new financial controller, Natalia Gregory."
"It's a pleasure," I respond to Alex as I reach my hand out for a handshake. Mr.Volk just smirks and flips my hand over to kiss the top of it and responds with,
