I checked the mirror one more time and took a deep breath. I wanted to talk to this girl. I just needed to convince myself to actually do it. It was just before five in the morning - the time I'd seen her yesterday - and I walked out of my room and down the long, stone hallway, lighting the torches as I went. I sounded harsh before, so I would try to be gentler today. As I strode into the garden, I looked down at the pretty white flowers, wondering if it was weird or not to bring her some. I reached down and picked a few. Why not?
I turned the corner around the tall hedge and saw her standing and feeding the turtle ducks fire flakes. Their quacking was adorable. This time, she was wearing a long, deep scarlet dress and had her hair tucked neatly into two buns. It was styled almost like how Mai wore hers. I liked that hairstyle.
"Hello there, ma'am." I said from behind her, and she jumped and turned around. As soon as she locked eyes with me, she fell to the ground, bowing.
"No, no you don't need to do that miss. Here, I brought you some flowers. I thought they looked pretty - like you." I said, reaching my hand out again for her, but when she looked up at me, I realized it was a different girl. Before I could correct myself, she took my hand and stood up, gazing lovingly at the flowers.
"Fire Lord Zuko, what an honor! These are absolutely stunning, and I am beyond flattered." She said, taking my handful of white dragons.
"Um... I'm glad you think they're pretty. They are." Oh wow, that sounded really terrible. I thought, kicking myself for coming across so casually. "I do have a question, though."
She smelled the flowers and looked up at me, batting her eyelashes and doing that thing girls do when they flirt. The corner of her lip turned up into a smile.
"Were you here yesterday too? In the garden I mean." I finally asked.
"Oh, yes! I come to the garden every day." She said, taking a step towards me. There was now not even a foot of space between us. She was wearing a floral perfume.
"Oh, hm. So you come by this pond every morning?" I asked again, wanting to be sure.
"Yes, I walk by the pond every day!" She insisted. I smiled, happy to have found the beautiful girl from the day before. She must have been wearing a lot of makeup then - she looked pretty different now.
"So then, what's your name? I'm Zuko." I asked. I wanted to be able to ask for her again.
"I know your name, sir." She said, giggling. I looked down and bit my lip. Of course she knew my name. "And to answer your question... my name's Hiromi."
