My attendants and I rushed about my bedroom packing everything I thought I would need. I decided to leave the very next morning to reach the air temple as quickly as possible. Taking the drawer out of my desk, I dumped maps and travel equipment into a bag and tied it shut. My stress was getting the best of me.

"Can't you move any faster?!" I snapped at one of the smaller attendants. He nodded and ran to collect my weapons, and I felt a pang of guilt. No time to apologize - I needed to finish this and get sleep before our long day of travel. I still hadn't eaten dinner and was absolutely starving.

Kaori.

Everything in me twisted into a huge knot and I felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach. I hadn't even thought to tell her I was leaving and I'd planned for us to have dinner together. It was nearly ten, so she had to be almost ready. The overwhelming dread I'd been feeling all day doubled.

"Chen, if I write a letter will you deliver it to our garden keeper for me?" I asked the attendant I'd snapped at.

"Yes, of course sir." He said, handing me a piece of paper and one of my nice pens.

"Thank you for your help." I said, and I started the letter.

Kaori -
I'm leaving tomorrow to go halfway across the world. I'm not sure when I'll be back. Sorry about dinner tonight. I really wanted to spend it with you, but this emergency came up. Can I see you tomorrow in the garden?  If not, I'll see you sometime eventually.

               Zuko

I stared blankly at the letter. My handwriting was terrible and it was definitely not romantic in any way, but it would have to do for now. Girls liked flowers - maybe I would send some flowers too?

"Here you go, Chen. Can you cut some of the little yellow flowers from the garden and bring those too?" I asked, folding the paper and handing it to him. I gave him some brief instructions, he nodded, bowed, and rushed out of the room.

I returned to my packing and stressing and tried not to think about how disappointed Kaori would be.
