"She wasn't looking for a knight, she was looking for a sword." - Atticus.
We made our way out of the destroyed castle, towards a large lake. Susan was leading the way through the golden sand on the beach.
"Please teach me to sword fight later Ed!" I pleaded as I walked next to him, a slight bounce in my step from excitement.
"I'll have to think about that." Edmund replied, his tone making it clear, that it was a definite no. He was very protective over me.
"Well don't think too hard we wouldn't want you hurting yourself." I giggled, the remark making Peter, Susan and Lucy laugh as well. Edmund gaped at me, tying hard to fight off his own smile. We often had many battles of playful banter, we knew neither of us meant what we really said though. He shoved me playfully, shaking his head.
"I'm being serious," he said sternly. "I don't know if I'm the right person to teach you anyway." I opened my mouth to argue, but was cut off by the sound of an arrow being released, Susan had shot a small rowing boat, with two men, holding an imprisoned golden haired dwarf, with an impressive beard. We caught up to where she was stood at the top of a wall of sand.
"Drop him!" Susan shouted to the two armed men in the boat, the two boys unsheathing their swords. I cringed at her choice of words.
"Susan you might want to rephrase that." I only received a sharp glare from the older girl at my correction, jeez only trying to help, but it seems I wasn't the only one perturbed by her words. The dwarf mumbled angrily behind his gag, before the soldiers dropped him in the lake.
Edmund and Peter gave their swords to Susan and I, then rushed forwards to help the unfortunate Narnian, and Susan shot her arrow at the men, killing one, the other dove into the water to avoid being shot. Peter dragged the dwarf to shore, laying him on the sand and Edmund pulled the boat out of the water, ready for us to use.
Lucy knelt down next to the dwarf and cut him free, using her dagger, as Edmund retrieved his sword from me. When the dwarf was free, he took off his gag and spat the water that he inhaled onto the sand, coughing and spluttering, as Lucy stood up to avoid it.
"Drop him?!" he questioned, clearly furious. Susan looked back to her brothers, with a blank face. "That's the best you could come up with?" his voice was gruff, like he always had to cough.
"I told you so!" I said to Susan, only earning an eye roll.
"A simple thank you would suffice." Susan tried to correct the dwarf.
"They were doing fine drowning me without your help!" he cut in quickly gesturing to the boat.
"Maybe we should have let them." Peter retaliated clearly peeved with the attitude. The dwarf only avoided his sharp gaze by looking to the sand.
"Why were they trying to kill you anyway?" Lucy asked, trying to steer the conversation slightly.
"They're Telmarines, it's what they do." he responded like it was obvious, shaking his hands from the burns, he had gotten from the rope.
"Telmarines in Narnia?" Edmund asked stepping forward slightly, looking towards Peter, to see if he knew anything. The Narnian looked to Edmund, hunched over trying to catch his breath.
"Where have you been the last few hundred years?" he asked, like he thought they were living under a rock. Lucy turned her gaze from her brothers and I and looked towards him.
"It's a bit of a long story." Lucy tried to explain simply. Susan handed Peter back his sword, and that's when the dwarf saw the lion head carved into the handle. He looked at the four siblings, his eyes skipping over me, and he came to a realisation.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me!" he said, his eyes widening. Looking over them again. "You're it... you're the Kings and Queens of old" he asked. Peter steps forwards, with his hand outstretched.
"High King Peter the Magnificent." he introduces himself. I snorted, but quickly covered it up with a cough, leaning into Edmund's back, as if it would make me disappear. The dwarf looks at him raising an eye brow. Ignoring his hand.
"You probably could've left off the last bit." Susan tells Peter amusement clear in her voice. Edmund tries to hide his smile, as I let out a tiny giggle.
"Probably." the dwarf laughs agreeing with Susan.
"You might be surprised." Peter says drawing his sword, pointing it towards the dwarf.
"Ohhh, you don't want to do that boy." Trumpkin warns Peter, tilting his head.
"Not me, him." Peter says looking towards Edmund. Edmund smiles slightly, as he draws his own sword, excited to get back into practising. Peter hands the small dwarf his sword, which he drops from the heaviness. Peter pulls me towards him and away from the line of action. I smiled gratefully at him, then I looked towards the two preparing for the fight. Edmund looks at me, he smirks and winks at me, making my face go beet-red, I put my hands on my cheeks to cool them down slightly. I need to stop blushing today.
All of a sudden the dwarf swung the sword towards Edmund's, catching him off guard. The dwarf then swung at Edmund's head, forcing him to duck, he then quickly struck him in the face. Edmund stumbled backwards, holding his nose.
"Edmund!" Lucy shrieked concerned for her brother. I let out a concerned gasp, covering my mouth with my hands, but I believed in him.
"Oh, are you alright?" the dwarf mockingly asked, before swinging at Edmund again. Ed quickly ducked out of the way and lightly hit the golden-haired man on the bum with his sword. Earning a giggle from both Lucy and I, and a groan from the dwarf.
Ed quickly glanced at me, before blocking another attack, and swung at the Narnian's head. The dwarf ducked, then swung at Edmund's feet. The attack was skilfully avoided by Edmund jumping. Their swords clashed a few more times, before Edmund got the upper hand, his movement so fluid water would be green with envy, he knocked the small man's sword out of his hands. Annnd crush intensifies.
I rushed forwards and congratulated him with a tight hug that he quickly returned.
"I think you'd be a perfect teacher." I whispered in his ear, before I pulled back, and Edmund rubbed the back of his neck. The dwarf was still in shock. He stared at Edmund and then the rest of us in disbelief. I could practically hear the gears turning in his head. He fell to the sand, eyes still wide.
"Beards and bedsteads." he exclaimed looking through us all. "Maybe that horn worked after all." he said not making any sense to any of us.
"What horn?" Susan asked confused.
