Alex's POV
I swam in the shallow waters near the beach, thinking about Iris. She was a human, but a mermaid. I didn't understand. I knew I couldn't stay much longer, my grandmother thought I had just gone out for a swim, although technically I did. I popped my head above the water, no one was on the beach, nor in the water. Before I could change my mind, I began hauling myself into the beach, once I was on the beach fear began to set in. It took me ages to get onto the beach, will I be able to get off? I tried to imagine myself with legs, but the image just wouldn't come. I started my way back into the water when my tail began to glow. I cried out, terrified of what was happening. Before I had the chance to acknowledge what I had done, I had legs. I stood up, and I fell down. I began trying to walk to the rocks Iris had climbed. With a lot of struggle I made it. I looked back at the water, to see my grandmother's head popping up from the water. She smiled and waved at me and I had barely any time to wave back before she dove back under.
I slowly but surely made my way up the rocks. Iris sure made this look easy. Once I had made it up, I had no clue where to go. She had disappeared from sight after making it to the top. I noticed some nearby houses and walked over to them. I knocked on the first door I saw. A young lady opened the door.
"Can I help you?" She asked.
"Yes, I'm looking for a girl named Iris. Do you know where she lives?" I asked.
"What's her last name?" The woman asked. This is where I drew a blank. She hadn't told me her last name.
"I, uh um.." I stuttered.
The lady laughed, "I know Iris, I'm just messin' with ya." I sighed with relief. "She lives there." The woman pointed to a door a few doors away.
"Thank you." I said, the lady nodded and shut her door and I walked to Iris's house. I knocked, and a little girl opened the door, she had big eyes and long blond hair. She looked so much like Iris.
"Can I help you?" The girl asked.
"Yes, I'm looking for Iris?" I said.
"Iris!" The little girl called into the house. Iris showed up moments later.
"Sup' Lil." Iris said. She noticed me. Her eyes widened. "Alex! Great timing, I was just about to start." She said, her voice becoming nervous. She grabbed my arm and pulled me into the house. "Thanks Lil!" She called. "What were you thinking?!" Iris demanded, after we had made it to her room. "You can't just come onto land! No one knows you!"
"You just came into land." I said.
"I live here!" She whisper-yelled. "Everyone knows me!"
"Whatever." I muttered.
"Listen, you need to go back to the ocean." She said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Like I said, no one knows who you are."
"Why does it matter?"
"It matters, because this is a small town, and everyone knows everyone." She hissed.
"Fine, but I want to know how you are a human and a mermaid."
"I'll tell you if you stay in the shallows, not on the beach, in the water."
"I didn't want to stay on the beach anyway." I muttered.
"What was that?" She smirked.
"Nothing!"
What would you do in this situation?? I would probably do something similar to Iris. I hope you enjoyed!!
