The Officer

Me and Phillip walked to the car as I sat in the passenger seat as Phillip was driving, we had the signs in the back. I kept my hands fidgeting. Why am I scared? We gotta save out future, before who knows what happens? Phillip...how is he feeling 'bout this? We were quiet as he sighed as I held his other hand gently squeezing it as he sighed. I asked, "Are you..mad?" Phillip said, " No. I get it. Why you want to do this... but just be careful, " I said," I'm always careful. Okay. Same to you." It was dark out as I sighed. Phillip sighed as I saw blue and red lights as I turned. Great. The police. I gulped placing my hands on the dashboard. Phillip pulled over as we looked at eachother. He placed his hands on the dashboard too... The officer flashed a light as I gulped. He said, "Hmm...just a broken tail light man, you girl, give me your liscene." Phillip asked, " What why?" The officer said, "Just checking sir. Calm down." Phillip said, " Is is cause she's black? She ain't driving. I am." The officer said, " Both of you, get out please." We nodded as my heart was beating fast. I got out as the officer said," Get on the ground hands behind your back!" Phillip got down with his hand behind him as the officer padded Phillip down only once. He looked at me said," Get down on the ground hand behind your back!" I lowered myself down on one knee and lowered to the ground as I felt the offcers knee on my shoulder as he padded me rown three times. Phillip said, "Hey! You can't touch her like that! " The officer said, " I'm just doing my job. Please stop talking." Phillip reached to his car I said, "Stop Phillip, Stop!" He said, "He ain't gonna shoot me, he doesn't know I'm black." The officer had his back to us. I said, " Please, just do what he tells you." The officer said, " Hey! What are you doing?! Put your hands up! Both of you!" I put my hands up as I'm was crying by now, I got my hands up, what else am I supposed to do?! Phillip had his hands up as the officer pointed his gun at me as I sighed held my head up the other officer got out and checked the car. The officer said, " Keep your hands up, you two." I gulped looking down as I stared at Phillip. He was getting teary eyed. The gun wasn't pointed at him. It was me. Always me.

The officer talked into his radio as he said, " I'm going to keep my eyes on you two. You can go now." I walked to the car slowly cause I thought he'd do something. He just stared at me the whole time. I got in the passenger side as Phillip got in to. He asked, "You okay babe?" I was shaking I said, " Yeah, it wouldn't have happened if you didn't reach over here. You could've died. Or I mean, I could've. Cause I'm darker than you..." Phillip said, " Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Why didn't you say anything?" I said, "I had to put my hands up, what else was I supposed to do?!" Phillip placed his hand on my thigh as I felt uncomfortable since the officer padded me like that...he wasn't even supposed to pad me. I'm a women. But, he's a punk police, he don't care. I can't do this no more. I said, "You don't get it... why did it have to be me?" Phillip said, " I'm sorry baby..." I wiped my eyes hard as I said, " Let's go." He nodded as we were quiet.... When we arrived, I saw the people coming down the road as I whipped out my sign and ran up to join in. Phillip said, " Theo wait! WAIT!" I slowed down as I yelled, " WE WANT JUSTICE!" Phillip ran next to me as I raised my sign up as the person up front had a mega phone said," We want Justice! When do we want it? Now!" Everybody repeated said, " We want Justice! Now!" It's call and response. I kept marching as I worked on auto pilot as Phillip kept close to me as I held my sign up bobbing it up and down as I yelled out as I tried to give it my all. They got understand what we're going through. Martin Luther King Jr had a dream, I still wanna get it. When will I? Hopefully I'll get it someday.... What's happening? Why are people running? Is something happening? The person said, "It's a peaceful protest!" Which was a
Said, repeatedly. I looked around scared as everyone was now looting and throwing stuff. Phillip said, " Theo? Theodosia!  Where are you? " I heard Phillips voice somewhere. where's he? I found him as he said, " We gotta get outta here. It's getting outta control. " I said, " Wait." Phillip said, " No don't throw anything. Use your mouth," I said, " WE WANT JUSTICE NOW! WE WEREN'T PUT ON THIS EARTH TO GET MURDERED!! " I sighed as Phillip held my shoulders steering me to the car I looked back as the person looked at me as I turned as I got in and Phillip drove back to the dorm. I was making sure nobody pulled is over again...

At the dorm...

When we arrived, Phillip said, " You alright baby?" I felt my throat tighten as I busted into tears. Phillip pulled me close as I buried my face into his chest as he rubbed his hand up and down my back as I cried. I still gotta do something. I have to tell Daddy. Phillip asked, "What do you want to do now baby?" I was shaking still as I said, " I have to tell Daddy..." He gave me a kiss said, " Alright, " I asked, " Can I sleep  with you tonight? Please?" Phillip said, " Okay." I smiled said, " Thank you, " Phillip said, " Anything for you, baby girl." I smiled as I took out my phone, and began texting Daddy.

Text messages between Theodosia and her Dad

Dad: Hey Squirt, are you okay?

Theo: No, something happened.

Dad: What? Who did something to you?

Theo: me and Pip went to protest, and on the way a officer pulled us over since we had a broken tail light. Anyway, he asked me for my liscene and Phillip got a bit upset, and the officer told us to get out as he padded me and Pip then he put his gun on me cause I'm black and Pip was reaching for the car... I'm scared Daddy. What am I supposed to do?

Dad: Oh. My. God. Do you know the officers name?

Theo: Umm...

What was his name? Oh. Officer Miller.

Theo: Officer Miller.

Dad: A'ight. I'll help you, I'll see what I can do. I'm just telling Zuris mom since she's a cop.

Theo: Okay, I'm still scared. Pip is too...

Dad: Keep ya head up sweetie. You can do it. Love you.

Theo: okay, love you too.

I sighed shutting off my phone as I still felt the officers hands on my body as I shuddered and decided to take a shower hoping I'd get his prints washed off me...

Ten minutes later...

After I showered, I got dressed in a spaghetti strapped blue tang top, and gray shorts and braided up my hair putting on my night hat to protect and preserve my hair. I went to Phillips room as he was on his bed. He had his arms open as I ran into them as he held me close. I kissed him passionately as he held my face as I rested my hands on his chest as he rubbed his hands up and down my back as I cried hard hoping it'd say everything I couldn't. Phillip said, " I know baby, I know. We'll be okay baby girl." I gulped and got tired and began thinking about what to do tomorrow. I snuggled up next to Phillip as he kept his arms around me stroking me gently as he kept whispering to me... I fell into a restless sleep scared of what tomorrow would bring. He shouldn't have pointed his weapon at me...
