Ch. 14

"Quite frankly, I'm surprised by you, Rogers." Fury said. "I expected this from Stark, but not from you."

Steve stayed quiet in his seat. He was a little shit all the time before he was given the serum, and he never understood why people always thought the serum was supposed to make him some freaking ray of sunshine. He glared at Tony.

"You guys are seventeen, I shouldn't have to babysit you." Fury told them

"Yeah, and why aren't you?" Tony asked. "We're supposed to be a team, so where the hell is our coach?"

"We have a lot of important things to do-"

"More important than training your team that's supposed to save the world?" Tony pressed.

Fury sighed. "I was hoping to keep this quiet until we know more, so don't tell anyone."

Steve nodded.

Fury tapped a button on his phone and brought up a hologram of a person.

"I know that guy." Steve said. "He came to my house and asked me to join the Academy."

"Same." Tony said. "Agent, right?"

"His name is Phil Coulson. He was a good guy." Fury said.

"Was?" Steve asked. "What happened to him?"

"He was shot. Ten AM last Monday, inside the Academy."

Steve let out a small gasp, while Tony's face remained stoic.

"Do you know who did it?" Steve asked.

"That's what we're trying to find out, but we also lost five members of SHIELD from the headquarters in DC. This may be a bigger threat than we originally thought."

"Why does that involve us?" Tony asked. "Aren't you guys the head of dealing with big threats?"

"That's the point, dammitt! Whoever this is, they're good. They bypassed all our security and used weapons we've never seen before. We might not be equipped to handle this." Fury said. "That's why we had this idea, to take remarkable individuals and see if they could become a team, a family, so that they could fight the things SHIELD never had a chance of beating."

Wow. Tony thought. That was one hell of a speech.

"Get to class." Fury said after the bell rang. "And try not to kill each other."

Steve and Tony left Fury's office and went to Home Ec, walking together because they were in the same class. The two reached the door to the classroom and stared at each other.

"So..." Tony trailed off.

"I guess we should apologize?" Steve said.

"Great. You go first." Tony said.

"No you."

"You were the one being a dick, not me." Tony argued.

"I was being a dick? What about you?"

"Jesus, Steve, one of us has to say something or we'll be standing here until winter. Let's just forget this ever happened. I know you hate me, and I still think your annoying as shit, so how about we a agree to keep it lowkey for the sake of our team?"

Steve nodded and stuck out his hand. "Truce?" He asked.

Tony rolled his eyes. "What are we, eight?" He asked, but Steve put on a little pouty face. "Fine." he said. "God, you look like someone kicked your puppy. Truce." Tony said, shaking Steve's hand.

"What's wrong?" Wanda asked Natasha while they were doing homework.

"Nothing's wrong. What do you mean?"

"I know that look, I've had to deal with it a thousand times with Tony. You're heartbroken." Pepper said with finality.

Natasha snorted. "And who would I be heartbroken over?" She asked.

"Bucky. You've been acting different since he and Tony kissed last Friday." Pepper told her.

"When will you get it out of your head that I like Bucky? He's annoying and won't leave me alone."

"Let us take you out." Wanda said suddenly.

"What? Why?"

"To cheer you up and take your mind off him." Pepper said.

"Nothing to take my mind off of because I don't like him."

"Please?" Wanda begged. "We'll make it a girl's night! You can meet Carol and Valkyrie and Val said she knows this really good bar."

"If I go will you leave me alone abut Bucky?"

"Sure." Pepper said. "Wanda, you get Carol and Valkyrie, I'll call Jane and Darcy."

"This is the place?" Wanda asked Valkyrie.

"Yah, just turn here." Valkyrie said, pointing around the corner.

Wanda pushed the door open and the two went in. Natasha, Jane, Pepper, Carol, and Darcy were already seated at one of the tables drinking and laughing.

"Nat is the one with the red hair, Darcy's the one with the adorable laugh, Pepper's got bangs, you told me you know Jane from LA, and Carol's the blonde one with the pixie cut." Wanda explained.

"Shit. When you said Carol would be here, you meant Danvers?"

"Yeah, why?"

"I kinda punched her boyfriend." Valkyrie admitted.

"I'm sure you'll be fine. Vers always complains about him, anyway. We're talking about Yon-Rogg, right?"

"Yup. He was being an asshole so I broke his nose."

"Mood. Now come on, everybody's wondering why we're standing in the doorway."

"Hi everyone, this is Valkyrie." Wanda told her friends.

"Hey, you're the badass with the sword Wanda told me about." Natasha said.

"Thanks." Valkyrie said and then turned to Carol. "Sorry I punched you boyfriend in the nose."

"It's fine." Carol shrugged taking a sip of her drink. "And ex-boyfriend. We broke up after I pushed him out a window."

"You pushed him out a window?" Jane squeaked.

"Wig." Was Darcy's only reaction.

"It was an accident. He's fine now." Carol said.

"See, I told you it was no big deal." Wanda said and the two sat down.

"See Tasha, isn't this better than staying back at school and crying?" Pepper asked.

"If you guys don't drop it with Bucky I'm going to hit you in the head with a peanut butter sandwich." Natasha deadpanned.

"Let's just get drunk." Jane suggested.

"Ooh Jane, is your boyfriend rubbing off on you?" Darcy asked.

Jane blushed and stared into her glass. "Loki's not my boyfriend." She said.

"Not yet." Valkyrie said and Carol giggled.
