My eyes pop open and I scream. I'm covered in a thick layer of sweat. My leg is on fire. I look down and am surprised to see it not red with fire but the pain is a dreadful burning sensation. Sunlight shines into the cave but I barely notice. I'm shaking in pain and I desperately scoot back against the wall. The dragons are awake. Astrid bolts awake next to me and frantically tries to calm me down. I feel horrible. My head is throbbing and my vision is blurry. I'm trying to slow my breathing but it's coming out in frantic short breathes.
"Hiccup, Hiccup! Please Hiccup you have to tell me what's wrong! Hiccup breathe! You need to breathe!" Astrid demands. She pushes my arms to my side and then takes my head in her hands. She holds it steady as she tries to make me look into her eyes. I keep squinting my eyes shut in pain and exhaustion. I try to focus on her face but my vision is blurry with tears.
"Hiccup focus on me. Focus on my breathing." She calmly says and I faintly hear her take a deep breathe. I try to do the same but end up coughing. I manage to gain one second of self control and faintly gasp, "leg."
She rests my head against the wall and rushes over to my leg. I feel her unwrap my leg and then I hear her gasp.
"Hiccup! Did you run on this last night? I think it's infected. We need to get you help, now!"
I see her get up and pace back and forth. I know what she's thinking about. We have to get me back to Berk but we can't leave Toothless here completely defenseless, and she could go get help but she can't leave me in this condition and she can't leave Toothless here because I'm literally useless now. I feel a cold liquid on my leg and realize she's pouring water on my wound. It burns. Now my whole body hurts. My head is throbbing and it feels like it's 100 degrees in here. Astrid pulls me away from Stormfly and lies me completely flat. She grabs a small thick blanket out from Stormfly's saddle and folds it under my head like a pillow. Im breathing better now but my vision is still blurry so I give up trying and just keep my eyes closed. I feel Astrid's hand rest on my forehead.
"You have a fever," She says. I moan in reply and feel her leave. She returns by my side with a wet piece of her shirt she must have torn off and rests it on my head. The water relieves a little bit of the burning sensation on my forehead but the throbbing remains.
"Drink," I hear here say as she lifts my head to her canteen. I take a few sips and she gently lays my head back down. Then I pass out.
