Big Time lead the way to the pit. Webby and Louie hung back as the 'other,' Louie and Huey walked in front of them. Ma Beagle had went on ahead to round up the rest of her family for the 'joyus,' event. She had called it.
Webby shivered.
The way she said joyus and the look in her eyes when she looked at the 'other,' Louie and Huey made Webby's stomach tighten into a knott.
"You don't think she'll make them fight to the death, do you?" Webby whispered to Louie keeping her eyes on the back of Huey and Louie who were slunking their way behind Big Time.
Ma Beagle made Huey keep the gun back at the trailer and any other weapon that was hidden among them. The 'other,' Louie happened to have had a swiss army knife still on him from last time. Webby wondered why Louie carried a knife while Huey had a gun. She wondered why when Ma Beagle went to get the black traveling box that had brought them here, Louie had jumped back, and snarled at her and almost started World War Three.
Huey made a distraction before they had asked more question or before Louie started a fight, and now, here they were, hoping beyond hope that they weren't heading to their doom.
The original Louie, who hadn't stopped starring at her. Or rather, her earring, just shrugged as if he could care less if they were or wasn't.
"Maybe I ought to get you a pair of dimond earrings." He said, and blushed a deep red when Webby looked at him sharply. "I, It's just you l, look nice with, with -."
"Louie!" Webby hissed at him. She pulled him close to her. "You don't really want them to fight to the death. Do you?" She asked.
Louie forced himself to look away from the dangling earring and into her firey eyes that reminded him oddly of when Ms. Beakly would when he had done something she didn't approve of. Louie swallowed hard and jerked his head from side to side. No matter how he felt about his double and Huey, he didn't want to see them kill each other.
"You aren't such a good liar anymore." Webby said, frowing at him.
Louie looked a bit offened by that statement.
"And what about you?" Louie said, "you are suppose to be this hard core, combat machine, but lately all you've done since we got here is -." He stopped when he watched Webby's upper beak quiver into a snarl, pratically daring him to finish that sentence.
They walked on ahead in silence, silently fueming at each other. Then stopped short when they heard chanting, and a low blow of a horn making Webby reach for Louie's hand nervously and squeeze it tightly. Louie squeezed it right back, cringing at the fact at his hands were sweaty and his heart racing a mile a minute. Big Time stopped them near the barbed wire entrence, and looked towards him and Webby.
"You two, head that way, follow the arrows." He said, nodding to the side of the gate. Webby opened her mouth to protest as Louie started to pull her along without question.
"We'll be fine." Huey assured her, with determination in his eyes. He looked towards his Louie who nodded in agreement.
"You two go on head." He told them.
Webby didn't like it, but couldn't do anything as she was dragged along side Louie who followed the arrows. She glanced back behind her and watched Big Time talking to Huey and Louie in a low whisper. Louie had a grim look on his face while Huey's eyes twinkled brightly.
Was he perhaps, enjoying this?
Huey saw Webby looking at him as they reached the top of the stairs and winked at her before Louie opened a door and usered her inside and slam the door shut behind them.
They were inside what looked like a top box, much like you'd find at a baseball game. Where only the most very important people sat. High above the game, and in the middle of it sitting in yet another rocking chair, was Ma Beagle.
"Come, sit." She said, patting the chairs beside her.
Webby and Louie glanced at each other and slowly sat on either side of Ma Beagle. Louie looked out of the glass window in front of them. It looked like a gladiator type arena with a bunch of Beagles in the stands, stomping their feet and chanting out something they still couldn't make out.
He saw his double and Huey stand near the barbed wire enternce stretching, and cracking their bones as if warming up.
"Y, You aren't going to make them fight each other. Are you?" Webby asked, not taking her eyes off them.
Ma Beagle chuckled.
"No, my dear." She said.
Webby sighed with relieve and looked at her.
"Though, that would make for a great marketing advestment." She said, thoughtfully. "Might take that into account after all this is over."
"Here they come!" Shouted Big Time through a microphone. "You know them, you hate them! The Dinomite Duo!"
"Wait, what?" Louie asked, confused. "You mean, they can actually fight?"
Ma Beagle snorted.
"Fight? Lwellweyen, they can do more then fight. Why do you think they are the soul defenders of our realm?" She asked. "Why do you think this whole world revovles around them when the rest just stay behind, in the shadows? Not daring to rise up against them?"
Louie stared at her.
Webby watched as Huey and Louie made their way in the middle of the arena. The Beagels booed at them that only made Louie and Huey smile more broadly at each other.
"Wait, if they are so hard core." Webby said, as a sudden realization hit him. "Why didn't they show any of it the last time we were here? We could have used that against -." She stopped when one name popped up in his mind. "Dewey." She whispered.
Webby craned her neck to look over at Louie who was staring out at his double and Huey with a sad look on his face.
"Yes. Dewey." Ma Beagle said, nodding. "He was the one who held those two together. But now that he's gone..." Ma Beagle sighed. "They've lost that spark." She said sadly.
"Our worlds have been unstable for some time now, even before you entered it." Ma Beagal continued. "Some of us wanted your world to crumble so that ours can be the superior one. So none would have to worry about fading into oblivation when their Original died." Ma Beagal paused and looked over at Louie. "Dewey is the only one who can save both our worlds from collasping." Ma Beagal continued.
"So, this isn't really about loyalty at all for them, is it?" Louie asked, looking over at her. Webby looked at him confused. "It's about them, coming to terms with -."
"Dewey's death, and what happened? Yes." Ma Beagal answered. "If they can't forgive each other over what happened, then," She paused and looked at him, "you can kiss saving your Dewey, and going home good-bye." She told him, almost in a harsh tone.
"What excatly are they going to fight?" Webby asked, as she watched the gates at the other end of the arena open up. Her heart pounding hard aganst their chest.
The whole arena gotten exstreamly quiet.
"Not what, my dear," Ma Beagal said, quietly.
All three of them watched as a small shadowy figure emerged from the gate. The look on Louie and Huey's face quickly changed into a shock and disbelief look. Webby and Louie glanced over at each other then back at the arena.
Webby felt the blood drain from her face, and her gripped the side of her chair tightly to steady herself. Louie; however, continued to stare at the figure that stood in front of Louie and Huey. He knew it was just a hologram, by the way it was glitching against the afternoon sun.
But it still looked so much like him that a lump had formed in his throat and his eyes started to water. In front of Louie and Huey stood the holograme of Dewford Dingus Duck.
