Webby stared at the photo, her heart skipped a beat and she felt a lump form in her throat. How did this even get here?
As Huey and the other's talked and ate the apples, carrots, and the few stale crackers, Webby slowly turned the photo around looking for any clue to her follow up question. She spotted a note on the back of the photoe frame and she felt her heart spead up more rapidly when she realized that it was Dewey's handwrittng.
Keep this safe.
Was all it said.
Keep it safe?
Of couse she'd keep it safe. But why would Dewey tell her tat if it wasn't important? What was it that she wasn't seeing?
Huey had stopped talking and noticed Webby had gone quiet again. That little bit of hope of her turning back to the old self he only knew of lifted a bit in his chest, a burning feeling making his lungs feel like they were on fire.
"W,Webby?" He stammered. He tugged at her sleeve as if he were a three-year-old trying to get attention from a grown-up then a sixteen-year-old. Webby blinked and looke up from the photo. "Y,You okay?" He squeaked out the question.
He felt his face get hot and knew he was blushing. But if Webby noticed she made no indication as she looked back down at the photo in her hands.
"Honestly," She whispered, with tears swelling up in her eyes, "I, I don't know."
Huey took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and opened them again.
He stared at the photo so he wouldn't see her tears.
He saw her, Lena, and the girl Violet all smiling as if laughing at some sort of joke someone had just told. He looked back at Webby, her eyes shining brightly with tears.
He hated to see her on the verge of tears, and didn't know how to fix this. Didn't know what was going on through her mind at the moment. First Dewey was taken from her, then Louie. The only other person she had was him, and he wasn't even the original. He was just a cheap knock off of the original.
He even started to feel guilty about using her as bait. He wondered if she even still wanted to do that, or if she had completely forgotten about it. Either way, he wasn't going to bring it up to her. Not now. Not when she was so emotional and could end up doing something stupid in the process. Like get captured herself. Or worse....
Huey shivered.
"Can I see that?" Magica asked, suddenly, interupting Huey's inner struggles. He glanced over at her as she finished the last of the stale crackers, and Webby looked up at the photo in alarm and clinched it close to her chest, eyeying her suspisously. "I, I sort of feel something coming from it," She explained, glancing at Huey. "I, It feels like it could be magic."
Webby slowly unclinched the photo from her chest and turned it back around to face her. Huey noticed the note that Dewey left and wanted to ask Webby if she's seen it or knew what it meant, but thought best not to ask as she slowly handed the photo the photo to her.
Keep it safe.
Huey vowed that if anything, he'd help keep it safe. Even if Webby didn't feel like he needed too. He wanted to. It must mean something important to be put on the back of something that seemed to mean something to her, and if Huey was right (and he always was) the person who wrote it meant more to Webby then anyone, and knew she'd actually held her part of the plea and keep it safe.
Magica gently took the photo from her hands and smiled moved her hand across the smooth glass. She no doubt felt magic radiating from the photo. She closed her eyes and hummed, she had thought all her magic had left her, but when she sense this photo's power obviously she still had some magic left.
She then inhaled sharply when she saw what could only be a vision. Glomgold watched as her pupils became diolated, her feather loosing what little color they had left, and her hands started to shake and Webby was ready if Magic accidently dropped it. But Magica didn't intend to drop it. She couldn't, once the vision started it was like she was in locked mode and could get unlocked until the vision was over.
Golmgold stared at her, Huey saw the blood draining from his face as Glomgold gently stroked her arm. He hated seeing her this way, he hoped she wouldn't black out again after this. It was like watching somone have a seizure and then suddenly it stopped.
Magica's eyes became normal again, and she stopped shaking violently then blinked and looked around.
"W,What just happened?" Huey asked, looking from Magica to Glomgold confused. Magica gave the photo back to Webby who took it and gripped it tightly as if it was her life line. Little did she know though, that someone close to her was it's own life line.
"I -." Magica began then stopped when she looked over alarmingly over at Webby who stared back at her, "Nothing, it, it was nothing." She managed to choke out.
"Okay." Huey said, but he wasn't buying it, and nither were Webby or Glomgold. "Look, Webby, we need to come up with some sort of plan now to save the Louie's and Dewey." Huey said, changing the subject quickly for he felt an arugement was coming on once Webby and Glomgold both opened their mouths at the same time.
Webby looked over at him and was about to tell him she agreed with suddenly the whole side of the diner was blown compelely off what was left of it's hinges. As the smoke cleared Huey heard the scraping clanking of metal against soild ground and knew immidently who it was without even looked.
"B.O.Y.D." Huey muttered.
Webby quickly put the photo in her backpack. Huey grapped at it's strap and started to take it off her. Webby gave him a sharp look.
"Trust me," Huey pleaded, as Webby held onto it. "Please."
Webby looked into Huey's eyes for a moment until B.O.Y.D's chuckle interupted her thoughts. She silently nodded and let him take the back. The Huey she knew and the one she knew now would never let her down. She was sure B.O.Y.D hadn't noticed Huey gripping the bag, didn't see him slowly put it across his shoulders as he entered the diner and the dust cleared.
All they had to do now, was keep him talking long enough for them to come up with a plan.
"It's funny how easily we seem to find you." B.O.Y.D said, all four of them looked at him. B.O.Y.D however was staring at Huey who's heart was pounding a mile a minute. He hated that look. Webby thought that was funny too.
"How do you keep finding us?" Webby asked.
B.O.Y.D turned his attention on her and even though he was a robot, Webby thought she saw something in his eyes as it sparked that made the back feathers on the back of her hair stand up. It was the excate same look an animal would look at when it's after it's prey, and it's mate. B.O.Y.D merely chucked and as he talked he didn't take his eyes off her.
"I would stick around, Father." B.O.Y.D told him as Huey had started to back away slowly, but froze and stared at him. "Might find some answers to the questions you both are looking for." Huey and Webby glanced at each other confused.
"I don't think the children need to hear or want to know anything you have to say." Glomgold snarled at him.
B.O.Y.D's metal eyes darted from him to Magica and snickered.
"How you've been, Magica?" B.O.Y.D asked, "I hear you lost your power," He continued as Magica stared at him. "went on, how'd you put it -? Vacation did they?" He asked.
Slowly dawned on Webby what he was implying.
"How'd -?" Magica asked, her voice shaking. "I, I only just told that too..." She looked over at Webby and Huey.
"You put a tracking device on me. Didn't you?" Huey said, sighing deeply.
"On you?" B.O.Y.D repeated. "Nah, not on you."
Huey stared at him.
"We put a micro chip inside your brain." He informed him. "Your eyes are like little scope camera's letting us see everything, your ears letting us hear everything. The only thing we hadn't been able to control is your mouth, unfortunantly." He told him, sighing with disappointment.
"W,When -? How -?" Huey stammered.
Webby saw the blood drain from his face. She could tell by the way he was acting that he had no idea about any of this.
"Right after you joined us, of course." B.O.Y.D responded. "Goldie figured you'd turn on us at some point, had one of those gut feeling so to speak. So we had one of our operatives, Gandra Dee, to built the chip, making it spreadable to anyone you come into contact with."
Huey's eyes widen.
"Y,You don't mean..." Huey stammered, his stomach churning.
A smile slowly spread across his face.
"Yelp. You've unwillingly planted the virus among everyone." He snickered.
Huey felt his legs shaking, the room spun, and he felt like his knees could buckle underneath him at any minute.
"How do we stop it?" Webby asked, B.O.Y.D continued to star at her, making Webby really uneasy. Webby edged closer to Huey just in case he passed out, or fainted.
"You can't." B.O.Y.D told her. "The only way to stop it is if -."
"I, I die." Huey whispered.
"You are the smart one." B.O.Y.D praised. "Though, I'm sad to say, not so observant. It was so easy planting that chip inside you, then activating the virus. Only a real hacker could -." He stopped abpubtly, only he was a bit too late and saw Huey's eyes widen.
"GO!" Webby shouted, she shoved Huey into Glomgold and Magica as B.O.Y.D quickly took a step towards her.
"B,But Webby!" Huey said, desperatly. "It, It's no use -. N,No matter how far I run." He looked towards B.O.Y.D who slowly lifted his left hand, as a small laser came out of his palm and pointed it directly at Webby.
Webby's heart pounded hard against her chest, as she looked from him to Huey's scared, guilt shown on his face.
"I, I've been trying so hard, to, to make up for what I have done, what I'm still doing. I, It's never enough!" Huey said, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. He didn't want to have her see him cry, but he just couldn't help himself.
The sound of the engine springing to life made Huey choke back a sob as he looked back at B.O.Y.D. The light shown on his laser gun hand blinking at the read for him to start shooting at any minute.
"Huey." Webby said, softly, and she quickly pulled him into a hug.
Huey was so taken aback that he didn't hug her back. He glared at B.O.Y.D through his tears, and B.O.Y.D only snickered at him in return.
Both Magica and Glomgold had no idea what to do at this point. Both frozen in place and wondering what they should do.
"Please, keep it safe." She whispered. "I trust you." Huey's heart lifted. Those three simple words made it enough for him to let her push him slowly away from her with an encouringing look to get moving.
He didn't waste any time.
He knew where he had to go now. Their little rescue mission will have to wait. He had something important to take care of first.
B.O.Y.D smiled as he watched his father, Glomgold, and Magic run out of the diner. He had no use for them, Webby on the other hand. He turned slowly to Webby who's eyes narrowed at him. He moved his metal toung across the tips of his metal beak making goosebumps crawl across Webby's arms.
She slowly took a step back from him, and started to run.
B.O.Y.D chuckled, and kept his eyes locked on his target.
"You can run. But you can't hide." He called to her, tauntingly.
This was just like him and his Webby back at the castle. The one thing that made him feel almost human. The chase. The adrendaline he thinks he feels during the game. Then the moment he's victorious....
"No! Stop. Please!" His Webby's voice echoing screams filled his ears.
This, This was going to be fun.
