What is the purpose of parents?
A mother is food source, caregiver,
Custodian of a million tiny needs,
A feral bear protecting her cub,
Soft-spoken words in the darkness
A father is grit and steel,
The first and last bastion,
Role model, superhero, friend
Fishing trips and cold beer
Quiet, tearful pride
Not everyone is so lucky
For them, parents mean violence
Abuse, trauma, abandonment
My mother passed away
Before I'd even had a chance
To be the adult she dreaded me becoming
My father continually chose
Women over me,
His only child
I have watched my friends
Deal with losses,
Recover from reprehensible trauma,
Hide the signs of abuse and neglect
And I have wondered
What is the purpose of parents?
