"Okay class" Mrs. Shiven said after we had all sat down. "We have some things to go over, but first I want everyone to take one of these slips of paper and write their name on it. Then fold it up and put it in one of the cans I'm passing around. If you have taken regular or honors physics before then put it in the can marked yes, if you haven't taken a physics class before then put it in the can marked no."

I glanced at Ryan. He looked nervous. I hoped she was just going to use these for a game.

I wrote my name down when I got a paper and Ryan passed me the container marked no, throwing his paper in and I did the same. I watched as it was passed up to the front along with the yes container and Mrs. Shiven grabbed them and put them on her desk.

"Okay" She said, walking back to the front of the room. "I'm sure you all have taken a science class before so you know that we will be doing a lot of labs. But this class will be different in a way because physics is one of the most difficult science classes there is and we will also be doing a lot of group work and you will need friends to help you through the material."

I looked at Ryan, knowing that we would be able to help eachother even though neither of us had taken physics before. But Mrs. Shiven had a different idea.

"I have decided that because so many of you are new to the study of physics, and we have roughly half and half who have taken it and who haven't, that I will be picking your lab partners and you will be expected to work with them on projects and labs for at least the first semester."

Oh no. I looked at Ryan. We were going to be stuck with one of the seniors. What if one of us got Ryder. I had seen him and his friends put their slips into the yes container.

"Let's start. I will pick one name from each jar and you will be partners. Once I call you, stand up and come get this lab and then you two may go to the back, pick a lab table and begin."

She pulled a stack of packets out and put them on the table in front of her. She grabbed both containers and reached in, picking a name from each one.

"Arianna and Kyle" she called and I watched as one of the senior girls stood up as did one of Ryder's friends.

They quickly grabbed packets from the front and walked away.

"Tyler and Ryan"

I glanced at Ryan who had relaxed a little. Tyler looked fairly nice and he wasn't Ryder's friend so he should be fine.

Mrs. Shiven continued calling the next few pairs, until

"Sam and Lily"

I stood up quickly, scanning the room. Ryder's other friend stood up, walked to the front, grabbing two packets and headed to the back of the room. I followed behind silently. At least he wasn't Ryder but I doubted he was much nicer.

We stopped at a table and he handed me one of the packets, placing his down on the table in front of him. He turned to me and said "Hey. I'm Sam"

"Hi Sam, I'm Lily" I replied.

"I didn't know that they let juniors take this class" He said.

I sighed. "I'm sorry that it bothers you and your friends so much that I'm in this class." I turned away, getting ready to start reading the lab.

It seemed to be one of those pointless lab safety things that we always do at the begining of the year. Burn a candle and measure a few things and then clean up and answer questions about it. It should be pretty easy to do without talking to him for the rest of the period. Hopefully by the next lab he could sort out his ego and work with a junior.

"Lily"

I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up. It was Sam.

"Look I didn't mean it like that..."

"Look Sam, I already heard what Ryder said earlier and I understand that you feel the same way. You don't need to explain yourself, it doesn't matter."

"No Lily I don't feel the same way Ryder does. We've been best friends since we were in preschool but that doesn't mean I can't see that he can be a jerk sometimes. And I was just saying that I really didn't know juniors could take this. I tried to take it last year but my guidance counselor said I couldn't."

Oh...I guess I had misjudged him a little.

"I know Mrs. Shiven from the Italian exchange trip last year and she offered to let me take her class and I convinced her to let my friend Ryan take it with me so I wouldn't have to take it alone."

"Oh"

"Anyway we should probably get to work on this lab" I said, looking around at all the other groups who had already started to work.

"Yeah"

We started gathering our supplies and did the lab making casual conversation. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, though I would rather have been working with Ryan, and the hour long class went by quickly.

"10 minutes left" Mrs. Shiven called out as we finished the last question on the lab.

He grabbed mine and walked up to the front, handing them both in for me. I went to my desk to start putting away my stuff and wait for Ryan and his partner to finish. I was just zipping up my bag when Sam tapped me on the shoulder again.

"Whats up?" I asked

"Um, well its like the first day back to school and Ryder, Kyle and I are throwing a little party down by the river and I was wondering if you might want to come." He said, hesitating alittle. "You can bring some friends too. You don't have to."

"Sounds like fun. I'll see if any of my friends want to come."

"Great" he said, smiling.

Ryder walked by and the bell rang.

"Come on Sam" He said, and the two of them walked away.

"What was that Lily?"

I looked up to see Ryan standing next to me.

"Sam just invited us to his party tonight" I said, still shocked.

"What?"

"Yeah, I know. Im confused too. But he said I could bring a few people so lets see if anyone wants to come. It should be a fun night."
