Ryder lived just down the road from Sam so he said it would be easier if we just walked.
We set off down the road after saying goodbye to his mother and I shot a quick text to Hunter telling him where I was going.
We walked to Ryder's in silence. The awkwardness was slowly creeping back and replacing the casual friendliness that had existed a few minutes ago in his room.
A few minutes later he turned and began to walk up a long driveway. A huge house sat atop a small hill which the driveway wound up. I could hear music and laughter coming from the house and could see a lot of people milling about in the backyard. It looked like a pretty big party.
We reached the door and I went to ring the doorbell but Sam just pushed the door open, chuckling at me.
I rolled my eyes and followed him into the house.
He immediately went off to say hi to a bunch of seniors who I didn't recognize. I looked around the room. It seemed like it was mostly seniors and I didn't really see anyone that I knew.
"Hey Lily" I heard someone say from behind me.
I spun around.
Ryan was standing behind me and his lab partner Tyler was with him too.
"Hey. Thank god your here I don't think I know anyone." I said, feeling relieved.
"Tyler and I just got here after we finished our physics project." He said.
"Hey, if you two don't mind I'm going to run off and see some of my friends. I'll catch you guys later" Tyler said.
"See you" Ryan replied waving as Tyler turned and disappeared into the crowd.
"So how did you end up here?" He said, looking at me questioningly.
"Same as you, we were working on the physics thing and he was like oh come to this party. Of course he ditched me the second we got in the door so I don't even know why he bothered to see if I wanted to come." I replied.
"Weird. Tyler hung out with me until we found you. He seems really nice."
"You're lucky. Sam just seems to ignore me. His mom is really nice though. She made us dinner and she seems really sweet." I said, smiling as I remembered how nice she had been to me.
"Huh he is a weird one I guess. I don't know why he wouldn't like you? But whatever" he said.
I shrugged. "Do you want to go find something to drink?" I asked.
Ryan nodded and I dragged him off towards the kitchen.
------
30 minutes later I was feeling pretty tipsy and Ryan was completely trashed. We were lying down on the grass in Ryder's backyard and laughing at the other people who were all drunk too. A few girls were dancing on the deck of the pool and one of them was so drunk she danced right into it and was now completely soaked."I'm gonna go get some juice" Ryan slurred, standing up to go inside.
"Ok. I'll just stay here" I said. I didn't really feel like moving. I had a great view of the stars and it was much more peaceful over here than inside the house.
I lay there silently just staring up at the stars. After a few minutes I heard someone walk over and sit down next to me.
"Hey Ryan" I said. Not looking up. "Don't you think the stars look so pretty?"
He chuckled and I looked over to see that I Ryan hadn't come back. It was Sam who was sitting next to me.
"Oh sorry. Hi" I said.
"You really like him don't you" Sam asked.
Wait, what? Who did I like? This kid was so weird.
"Who?" I asked.
"Ryan." He said.
"Ew no." I exclaimed. "We're just good friends. I would never like him like that, he is literally like a brother to me."
"Oh" He said.
It was silent for a minute until he spoke again.
"But I saw you kissing him at the party?" He asked.
Geez why did he care so much.
"It was a dare. We both agreed afterwards that it didn't mean anything." I said. "Why do you care so much anyway?"
He blushed.
"I....um. I kinda like you." He stuttered.
"Oh" I said.
I looked over at him. He was looking down at the ground but he soon glanced over at me.
"I know that you were planning on going to the fair with your friends tomorrow night but I was wondering if maybe you would like to come with me instead?" He asked quietly.
I didn't respond right away.
Did he really like me or was this all some elaborate joke he and Ryder were trying to play on me. I didn't know if I should trust him but at the same time I wanted to say yes. I think that deep down I liked him too and I wanted to at least see if that was true.
"Yes" I whispered back softly.
He smiled and leaned back laying his head on the grass.
"Oh and Lily" He said.
I looked over at him. "Yeah?"
"I think the stars look beautiful tonight too."
I couldn't hold back the grin that over took my face. I scooted closer to him and together we gazed up at the stars.
